An awful thing I admit. But I have done it a few times.
Anyone else? |

Never in 40 years of drinking.

0 lates
That's what the bosses back home like to see.
I got a raise.

My first two years here,
about 40 hangovers
and 1 missed shift
(I phoned and found someone to cover for me first though)
Getting drunk with the boss until 5 a.m. and then going in to work with a splitting headache is par for the course in Korea. (but since my unrelated illness this spring I've turned down his invites; I'm changing my Korean-induced bad habits). |

With the exception of one incident where I drank heavily the previous night and was late for work the next day (2 hours) I have never taken a day off from work in all my time in Korea, and that was the only time I have ever been late too. I have had my fair share of hangovers though. |

I can't bring myself to drink the night before having to teach. There's nothing worse than teaching with a hangover. It's a whole new level of pain. |

even though i'm a jackass on these internet boards the last thing i'd be is a jackass at work.
even coming in with booze on your breath is unprofessional and embarrassing. and i like to drink. |

Nope. Been late 1 time in 4 years. That was because all the teachers got wasted with the VP of the School. Only reason I was late was because my alarm clock died that night. (I was using my cell phone)
I say, if you have sick days, might as well use them. But, there is probably a better way to use them that for being hungover. |

Guilty as charged. Never an entire day, just late mornings. How often... It varied. At least once a month for one year, then less frequently. It generally depended on where I was working, who I was working for, and who I was working with, since most of these instances came about as VanIslander says:

Lord, can I relate to that. I still have vivid and painful recollections of going to sa-cha or oh-cha and then to the boss's or a colleague's home, where they'd roust their wife out of bed and she'd crack out the premium scotch or cognac. It was totally wasted on me. At some point I'd pass out and then, seemingly 10 minutes later, find myself on a floor or sofa in a strange place (with a pillow and blanket on me, as if by magic) wondering where on Earth I am. There'd be clatter in the kitchen, people I'd never seen before throwing open curtains and windows in the dead of winter.
It would still be darkish outside and I'd struggle to remember how I'd gotten there. Then school-age children would file past from bathroom to kitchen, book bags, school uniforms... Who are they? I realise where I am, how I got there, and find my necktie, stagger to the bathroom, wash up a bit. Staring at my pasty face in the mirrored medicine cabinet, wishing I had my toothbrush, wishing it were the weekend...
My host, colleague, boss ... these guys all had 10 or 20 years on me, but I felt like a POW being force-marched and sleep-deprived like that. It was pure pain, and I hated it. Going to work all punchy, liquor-breathed, unshaven and in yesterday's underwear. And oh how I envied their ability to sleep at their desks.
Less excusable to be sure were the times it was just me being out too late, bringing home a girl and being on the job till the sun came up. There'd be some drinking involved, but nothing like a full-on bender with work mates. Then it was just lack of sleep, which is easier to handle than working off a jag. I couldn't imagine teaching or speaking in front of a crowd, though. Again, if I could have mastered the skill of sleeping head-down on my desk with my jacket draped over me like the others, I'd probably have been able to punch in at 9 o'clock and then go to the sauna. None of them put in a fuller day than I did for having shown up on time. |

thank god for jongno guru, this thread was getting so sanctimonious i could take it anymore. korea is a great place to get drunk on the weeknights. and if you miss a little work, well, hey, shit happens. you might miss that raise, but maybe you won't be around long enough to collect it anyways. it's your choice. just as long as you don't put other people in a jam because of it. |

One time in my three years of teaching. It was in China and I was sick as a dog by the time my 4:00 PM class came. I somehow summoned the strength to get up and post a cancel sign on the classroom door and went back to bed.
I generally avoid drinking on the weekdays because I want to be in good form in the classroom. I can't teach properly with a hangover. It's no good for me and no good for my students. |

My first year here I would come to work hungover about once a week but I think I only missed 2 days due to my stupidity....
Nowdays I never drink much the day before work(only some Friday and saturdays) except for some occasion like a birthday,etc.... |
