I got married to a Korean national in Korea two years ago. Currently, we are living in Los Angeles. We are planning on coming back to live in Korea for a year while her mother's health is deteriorating. Has anyone recently or in the past year applied from abroad (F6 visa) to get the permanent residence visa from the Korean embassy? All the information I can find seems to be outdated from 2012. All help would be appreciated. I know workers from both the US and Korean embassies will give you different answers each time you call.

First of all, the F6 is not permanent residency. It is simply the marriage visa which must be renewed on a regular basis depending on the number of years they give you. The best thing to do is visit the Korean Embassy and fill out the needed paperwork to get it done. There is no need to visit the US embassy since you are not applying for anything related to what they can do for you.

I am not sure about the total cost of things, but you can get a copy of the Foreigner Sojourn Guide (most recent version is 2013) and it will have all the particulars about what you need to do when applying. Good luck with your processing and have a safe trip. Cool

One more thing,

Here is the link that will take you to the page you can download the document. It has served me well in explaining things to people with questions. Perhaps it will help you and others as well.

http://www.hikorea.go.kr/pt/NtcCotnDetailR_en.pt?bbsGbCd=BS10&bbsSeq=2&langCd=EN&ntccttSeq=45

After looking at the new file, it appears they have updated and revised it. It is current to 2015.02.16

It should not have changed much, if any other than typos, etc. Anyway hope it helps.
