I posted this ten pages in on the other current global warming thread, but maybe it deserves some attention in and of itself.

Google video: The Denial Machine (from CBC)

Quote:
In the past few years, a hurricane has engulfed the debate about global warming. This scientific issue has become a rhetorical firestorm with science pitted against spin and inflammatory words on both sides.

This documentary shows how fossil fuel corporations have kept the global warming debate alive long after most scientists believed that global warming was real and had potentially catastrophic consequences. It shows that companies such as Exxon Mobil are working with top public relations firms and using many of the same tactics and personnel as those employed by Phillip Morris and RJ Reynolds to dispute the cigarette-cancer link in the 1990s. Exxon Mobil sought out those willing to question the science behind climate change, providing funding for some of them, their organizations and their studies.

Featuring Frank Luntz, PR advisor to the tobacco industry when they were denying links between smoking and cancer.

(Oh, and I've checked it to make sure there are no deliberate falsifications or other distortions as in the Great Global Warming Swindle)

Nice video. I don't really know who that reporter is but everything he touches is gold, i swear.

Not a lot of shocking information: A lot of depressing information, just no real surprises.

No google video in China? Damn. Can you not go through a proxy? Otherwise, the video is also available at the CBC website: http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/denialmachine/

And khyber, the reporter is Bob McKeown.

"The public can't understand the complex science of climate change ... so convince them that scientists don't fully comprehend it either. Then persuade them that without sound science it makes no sense to take preventative action at huge economic cost."

I love that the celestial names in the Denial Machine don't even publish on - thus actually study - the material they "debunk."

Weather Warfare
December 3, 2006

Jerry E. Smith was on the program back in June and spoke about HAARP.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haarp

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weather_warfare

Jerry returns to us to speak about his follow up book "Weather Warfare - The Military's Plan To Draft Mother Nature". We get into talking about some of the technology involved, the different military projects including "Air Force 2025: Owning The Weather" and the other documented history of weather modification.

Do the military use earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes as part of their new weapons arsenal? Do rain making technologies that people like Wilhelm Reich developed actually work? If so, what does this do with the balance of the climate?

I've noticed that whenever there's a big snowstorm or the temps plummet somewhere the Global Warming Denial Machine heats up (pun intended) and they're like "See? See? All of this global warming stuff is wrong!!" That's the message used to convince the simpletons.

"Warming" is only half of it. Pollution is mucking with the earth's thermostat which entails wilder swings in weather including but not limited to, higher average global temps.

anyone who knows anything about Venus will see that global warming can happen. Venus, a planet where a CO2 atmoshpere traps in so much heat as to make it hotter then mercury.
So, the equation is simple 1 planetary atmosphere + too much co2 = really hot planet.

Well, as true as that is, the connection between CO2 and the greenhouse effect is not so much what's being disputed. Rather, the attacks tend to be on the link between man-made CO2 and the completely unprecedented rate of climate change that we have been experiencing. Probably the most common canard is that solar activity is causing the effect, as if that hadn't occured to climatologists before. Others simply dispute that there is insufficient data to make the connection, and some particularly gullible people think that all the extra CO2 comes from volcanoes, a ridiculous claim that has no scientific basis whatsoever.

Of course, when it comes to muddying the water of public perception, any of these claims, no matter how naive or specious, will generally be sufficient to create contention and the impression of 'debate', particularly amongst those who see a strong association between concern for the environment and liberal politics. The possibility that, at least in this case, 'reality has a liberal bias', as Stephen Colbert puts it, is often discarded through softheaded handwaving by these people. ExxonMobil has known this for some time, and discussed it in an internal memo from 1998 that outlines their strategy: ExxonMobil Global Science Communications Action Plan (pdf)

Interestingly, in September last year, the Royal Society sent a letter to ExxonMobil requesting that it stop funding global warming denial groups, on the basis that these groups have ""misrepresented the science of climate change by outright denial of the evidence". This is apparently the first time in the Royal Society's 347 year history that it has ever had any communication of this type with a company. Here's the letter (pdf).

I'll have to take a look at it earlier. It seems there are quite a few people pushing the idea that global warming is a scam. I believe it is a problem and will become a bigger problem if we don't deal with it now.

I still have my doubts about global warming. Irregardless of if it exists or not, the matter of pollution, fresh water depletions and deforestation are all serious concerns today and should be tackled just as seriously as if global warming were proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.

I'm interested to see this... This weekend I'll watch and comment on it, if I have anything to add.

Unfortunately most people see global warming as a political issue. Its not: its a scientific and moral issue. The politicians and businessmen should be listening to those in the know, not worrying over their short term profits.

global warming isn't, itself, a moral issue.
