HI I am looking at a job offer in Sacheon and was wondering if any body could tell me a bit more about it:)

The search didn't bring up much information.

Main ??'s

Is there a foreign community at all?

If you have lived there, what did you like, in general.

What did you dislike?

How about E-mart, things to do or see?

I am not looking for a jammed packed Seoul experience, nor do I want a bunch of night clubs or anything, I just want to be sure I am not going to the sticks and also if there would be other expats around to be friends with.

Thanks

Where are you going to be, Sacheon or Samcheonpo? Samcheonpo is in Sacheon county but they are separate towns and quite different imo.

Samcheonpo is lovely I think, it has a Homeplus, a beach, a harbour, a bridge linking it to Namhae island. It has a nice feel to it too and bus connections to everywhere you'd want to go. I go to Samcheonpo as often as I can to enjoy the beach and the coast and pick up food from Homeplus.

I don't really like Sacheon so much, I don't go there often, but it has a small Asia Mart where you can buy stuff to make Indian/South Asian food and a Dominos Pizza and again lots of buses to other places. Sacheon is just your typical small town with nothing much to it from what I can tell. Since I already live in a similar small town locally I don't really feel the need to spend any time there.

Sacheon is really really close to Jinju and there is a Sacheon/Jinju ESL teacher community that is quite active and friendly so you'd meet lots of people. There is a Sacheon/Jinju teachers group on Facebook where you could ask for more specific information.

There is also an engineer population in the area so you can meet other European and American people who are not teachers.

Sacheon has a homeplus. But the good thing I think is from there you can get a bus, ride 40 minutes, and be in Namhae. Namhae has great beaches and swimming.

One of the most boring conservative areas of Korea. If you take a job in Sacheon ask for a house in Jinju and commute. Sanchempo is just too far away from everywhere to bother working there. Have you been offered a hogwan or public school job. Even Koreans try to avoid teaching jobs in these two places. Expats there tend to be over 50 with more than 3 visits a week to the pub if you know what I mean.

Fourteen years ago it was really hard to get cream cheese, French wine or disposable razor blades there and every pizza had a large candied gelatin ball in the middle of it. I'm sure it is a lot easier to live there these days. I always thought Koreans were very much friendlier there than many larger cities. In Samchonpo everything is a bike ride away including several great beaches and island hideaways. If you ask for housing near the local bus terminal you'll have easy access to the twenty minute shuttle to Sacheon to do international banking, 45 minute trips to Jinju or hour and forty minutes express to Busan for weekends. Live in Jinju and glorify the Dong Bang Hotel? Stop by for a movie or on your way to Jirisan.

Deb, did you end up going to Samcheonpo? Can you share your experience there?

Hi there! I noticed that last post was in 2011 so I wanted to see if things had changed or improved for the better in Sacheon. I'm thinking of taking a job at a tiny international school there and was wondering if there is an expat community there and if so, what it's like. I would be traveling with my fianceƩ who is not a teacher and want to know if there will be things for him to do and other work for him. He is working on getting a degree and his TEFL certification now.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks! Smile
