Suicide bombing kills over 37 in Beirut

Quote:
Two suicide bombers [on November 12] attacked a crowded commercial district in Beirut, Lebanon. Hundreds are wounded, dozens dead. Recently, Beirut had been largely free of the kind of violence now commonplace next-door in Syria. Today's attack is the worst the city's seen in years.

. . .

[The attack hit] an sprawling urban area in the South of Beirut. It's a working-class area, and the place where the bombs went off was in a crowded shopping street. And it seems to have hit at rush hour, targeting people at a time when it would maximize casualties.

This may be the worst attack since the Israelis bombed Beirut in its 2006 offensive. Lebanon hosts over 1 million Syrian refugees, which is about 20% of its population.

That seems even to be the tone of the NPR article. "Well, we know there's a conflict between Shia and Sunnis, and ..." But at least the NPR article underscores that this attack is a major one precisely because Beirut has had a peaceful recent history. There is none of the reverence or horror though of accounts of the attacks in Paris.

Plain meaning, in recent history you had Druze, the Amal, phalangists and various other religious groups murdering each other in large numbers. France has not seen that sort of thing since the Huguenots. Of course there will be a different reaction. Mass shootings in Scandinavia are more newsworthy than those in America. Why would you be surprised by that?
