Currently I am teaching in Beijing.

Before I taugh in Korea/Seoul for many years.

I am considering taking an M.A. in something related to international relations/asia pacific studies.

For those who have taken an M.A. or who have knowledge on the subject:

How much of your own first hand experience can you usually include in an M.A. thesis? I am trying to estimate what the balance between library research and first hand experience is.

Thanks in advance.

1st hand experience, if it was documented research, is part and parcel of a thesis.
1st had experience if it is just based on empirical knowledge and observations from past experience has little or no place in your thesis but will influence you on what you do and how you do it.

At the master degree level, unless you are doing some original, field research, your thesis work will almost exclusively be based in theory and other published research papers. Other than your analysis of that review and.or metadata there is little room for your own empirical knowledge.

IF you are doing original (1st hand) research then your data analysis, discussion and conclusion are based on the findings of your research but there may be some room for your previous experience to be brought to bear.

+1

Your personal experience, particularly given those disciplines, will be irrelavent during the thesis writing exercise unless it directly informs the design. Even then, you'll be required to back everything up with standing theory and research results.
