The average pay for an assistant professor is w45,000,000 a year. The usual teaching hours are 9.

There is a university in Busan that as late as 2012 was stealing over a million won from their staff by claiming that they hadn't deducted the right amount of tax due to the 2010 halting of the 30% income deduction for non-Koreans. The fact that on the salary they were paying the tax payable was about w300,000 was irrelevent.

There are other universities that deduct 4.4% tax, a rate that does not exist.

Married to a non-working Korean and have kids, you should be receiving an additional w60,000 a month family allowance, although many universities pocket this cash.

The final one is the universites that employ you deduct tax and forget to remit it particularly if you leave the country, or were only employed for the vacation.

don't forget our friends at Hongik Univ who are docking teachers 80k/class hour/week when you lose classes to drop you below 15 hours/week. Of course you make it up the following semester as OT but your are only paid 28k/hour for that and can only make up 6 hours/semester.

I know this isn't addressing the OP but regarding Hongik University, this used to be the sought after job in Seoul. What they're doing now about losing hours and making up hours is insulting.

A few of us at the university I work at are under hours (1 or 2 hours for the week). We don't lose money this semester and we just have to make up the hour/s the following semester to bring us up to 12 hours teaching a week.

But back to the OP. It's unfortunate but the economy here in Korea means that the powers that be will take advantage of the workers. They know that the work has limited options so they will milk as much as they can get - not just out of foreign workers but Korean workers as well.

Just out of curiosity, those in uni jobs, are you still getting free housing, a stipend, or are you paying rent?

We just started paying rent at my place after 10 years.

At the top 40-50 universities" You can more or less sum it up this way : (e.g., actual working hours always being longer, sudden firings being common, salaries being low, no respect given to foreign faculty, etc. (Thank you J7.)

Please see:

And more more if someone makes money because of extra work it is not because of the University but in spite of the University . If someone gets caught they will be punished. Remember the in charge Korean professors and sanctimonious as hell If you are at a big school it is like being the driver with someone in the back seat of the car with a gun . Drive. Make a mistake and you are dead Yep great job.

If a hogwon that paid 2.3 decided to say they paid 3.0 because they also provided housing , airfare and severance they would get flamed for it. 2.3 +300 + 200 + 200 =3m

Just for a start when calculating salaries I think it is fair for Universities and hogwons to be judged according to the same standard.More importantly contact hours/ teaching hours means ZERO. What counts is is total work (and trouble ) compared to compensation.

Now a couple of questions :

Is HIRE FIRE, AND PRUNE THE DEAD WOOD for 41 -42 million a year (big schools) before ANY and ALL l deductions that good of a job anyway? (remember also sky is the limit with unpaid extra work)

I'd say if they are cutting corners on you and trying to pay you less, just do less work.

I know a number of schools on the mainland who are cutting out the housing benefit. If they want to do less for you, do less for them. They need to understand that minimum wage gets minimum effort.

Sudden firings? Universities must give 3 months notice for non-renewal of contract. If they fire you at the last minute you can take them to court and easily win. I've heard of someone winning a years salary because they fired them just before the semester because the director didn't like them - no issues with the person before that etc.

So that isn't true. If this happens to you and you are working at a university, by the time November 30 comes and June 1 comes around and nothing has been said to you but for some reason the university says they aren't re-signing you, you can take them to court and win at least a years salary.

That is what I've heard anyway.

That's why they like demanding a resignation letter. Never ever resign because it lets them off the hook.

I have a fan! Keep beating that drum, G, and perhaps it will all come true someday. Until then, I and my colleagues who know better will continue checking in from time to time to read your idiotic posts and snicker...

Isnt it cool what Hong Ik iis doing?. U going make excuses for them too? At any rate 41 m becomes around 31 m after all deductions. Throw in all the other sinister stuff that goes on at the big famous schools (where do you start?)and you get the real story. Numbers dont support what u claim. But what can you expect from infomercials? U seem real threatened by what i say. Look at your posting history.

You forgot the J7 again.

That is the attitude everywhere now. Market forces have brought out the inner fascist.

Koreans may be used to working under negative pressure, but westerners simply don't thrive in such regimes.

univs messing with people has been going on for years. I remember back in the spring 04 Sogang Univ (NOT the SLP hogwon chain) decided to "shut down" either their unigwon or it may have been a reorganization of the credit programs and laid all the teachers off only to reopen things under a new title etc, they made all the laid off teachers reapply for their jobs and if they were hired back it was at a much lower salary.

I remember this because I was hired to teach a teacher program there that summer and followed a curriculum I found out later was developed by a laid off teacher. Also recall the 4 of us who taught it getting letters from the laid off teachers accusing us with being scabs.

Was really embarrassed being duped into this
