Riiiiiiiiiight so this is the first time I'm applying with EPIK. I'm not worried about them checking the people from my reference letters, which are here in America.

BUUUUUUUUUUUT...

I had a job in Korea. It was supposed to be a one year contract, but, well, you know...first professional job out of college...I wasn't the best employee. So they changed it to a six month contract, and said I could renew after I finished the six months.

That was 4 years ago. In that time, management changed. I'm not even sure my supervisor is still there, who I listed on my application. And everyone called me "Kei," which was my nickname when I was there.

So, my question to you is, do you think this school, if they don't remember me by name, will scrounge up their records and tell them about my contract history? Do they have something like that on record, you think? I know that anything other than a one year contract is unusual in Korea. But there were other teachers there as well that were there less than a year; I'm thinking they had special cases, or were temporary.

After a few more years in the professional work world, I've definitely learned my lesson and have bettered myself professionally...no more stupid mistakes!

So far, so good.

In short: This is a load of rubbish.

Long version: "They" didn't do anything to your contract; you and they, together, did. You were sponsored into the country based on a one year contract and given a one year visa. It was your (ill-advised) decision to agree with the employer to screw you over on changing the contract. Once you hit the six-month mark, you're covered by the labor laws and it's a bit more difficult to can you without legal consequences.

It doesn't matter if the management has changed; what matters is if the school is still in business. That means that the school quite likely has the same owner and, of course, records of employing you and sponsoring you for a visa.

As much as it galls me to say this, I'd be on the side of any employer in Korea who considers someone who voluntarily reduced their one-year contract to six months because they "weren't the best employee" to possibly be waving a humongous red flag.

Immigration, of course, has records of you being employed in Korea so you can't just bury that.

Grand! And that's not sarcasm. I suggest you try entering the field again in a country other than South Korea.

I was neither rude nor sarcastic.

This is sarcasm: Perhaps you need a new dictionary.

The long and short of it is that it's out of your hands. If that job is on your resume, they may very well contact they regarless of whether or not they are formally listed as a reference. It has happened to me and to many, many, many others here over the years. Worrying about it won't change a thing, so just put in your application and hope for the best.

A note to the wise, though. DON'T bring up the school if you are interviewed unless THEY bring it up first. You'd be surprised at just how many people divuldge information harmful to their employment prospects without being asked and withought thinking it through first.

Epik is pretty thorough. you might be able to sneak it past them, but it will still show up on immigration.

Your post was definitely rude by any definition, I'm sure some of my previous younger students could have pointed that out.

Oh, get off it. My response to the OP was not rude. I pointed out a few facts. My response not being the one she wished to hear does not make it rude nor does it make it sarcastic.

"개"? That's a rather unfortunate nickname to be using in Korea.

From the writing style of the OP's first posting, I'd put my money on the fact (s)he is lying or withholding the true facts in this case and the problems experienced in the past are of his/her own doing.

TML: I already covered that in my first post in this thread. And look at the OP's reaction!

I do think CentralCali's response was rude (not sarcastic though), and I don't see what was wrong with Bobbibob's reaction.

If Bobbibob only had one job in Korea and messed it up, I think it would be better for him to apply to EPIK as a Korea newbie. If EPIK is actually authorized to check Immigration records though he will probably not be chosen.

Come on. Bobbibob could improve his history by finishing a contract with another hagwon and try EPIK next year.
