|

Hyundai Motor Co. is planning to offer its first hybrid electric car next year, the company said yesterday.
Korea's largest automaker is developing a hybrid version of its Verna sub-compact car. The new model, tentatively called the MC, is expected to be out late next year.

...only 5 years after Toyota introduced the Prius. Will the Hyundai come with the SELF-PARKING option of the 2003 Prius?
MC = mediocre construction? |

Hey Mr Trumpet, don't knock it. Better late than never. The R&D on these things costs a fortune so I can understand why it has taken a puny carmaker like Hyundae this long to catch up.
Where's Ford's hybrid? GM's, VW's....?? |

When has Hyundai done and R&D? They've 'emulated' Japanese models from day one. If they've come up with a single original technology of any importance, I'll eat my hat.

Ha ha... thought that would send you scuttling across cyberspace
irony... neither car you recommend is ready for production
Looks like those "can't come up with an original idea" Asians have Ford and GM beat this time
Didn't know you worked for Hyundae Mr Trumpet... |

The Saint's faith outweighs both his intelligence and his reading skills.

Didn't know you needed reading assistance. Allow me to be of service:
1. The Ford Escape Hybrid SUV is in production. Here's a review.
2. GM's hybrid engines are also in production: "May 2004, King County, Wash., took delivery of 235 diesel electric hybrid transit buses."
3. The VW Lupo, is not, strictly speaking, a hybrid, but it's been getting 3 liters per 100 kilometers since 1998.

...watch and learn, m'boy, watch and learn.
(I find it helpful to consistently and obstinately hold a position I know will be considered repugnant, although I guess there's something to be said for being a moving target.) |

Saint. Cost really is a red herring. As with most things, the reality here is politics. A lot of technology which is "too good to be true" tends to be supressed; its developers bought out ... or in the most extreme case scenarios: snuffed. |

sad but true. FWIW in Japan, each Prius was, at least a couple of years ago when I was having conversations with my Japanese Toyota salesroom manager friend over beers, subsidised enormously to make it marketable.
SUVs still sell like hotcakes worldwide though and I guess they'll keep selling them if we keep buying em |

SUVs are awesome. My family has owned at least one for the last 12 years. The Montero was a bit top heavy, but it held up to a pounding and we never had an accident. The Trailblazer we have now is a little beast. It's got a lower center of gravity and has 75 more HP than the Montero did.
This is why carmakers would be smart to immediately start making a hybrid SUV. Why build these little cars that only chicks are gonna want when near everyone wants an SUV. Market a new technology people are nervous about with a vehicle everyone wants to get the hybrid tech off the ground. Am I the only one that sees the logic in this?
Disclaimer: This strategy only works if the loss of horsepower from gas to hybrid is minimal. |
