Along with co-writer Alan Zweibel, he created the surreal comedy series "It's Garry Shandling's Show" in 1985, which was notable in it's subversion of the standard sitcom format by having characters openly acknowledge that they were all part of a TV show. This went beyond just the employment of elements used in "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show" of years past, when George Burns would frequently break the "fourth wall" and speak directly to the audience, for Shandling's show went so far as to incorporate the audience and elements of the studio itself into the storylines, calling attention to the artifice of the show entirely as a farce. Brilliant stuff. He will be missed by standup comedians everywhere. |
