"Cool Hand Luke" & other stuff ...

His film career began to take flight in the early 1960s. He starred in 1963's "Charade," a whodunit that features Kennedy, Cary Grant, James Coburn and Walter Matthau seeking out the $250,000 they suspect was left behind by Audrey Hepburn's dead husband. His other acting credits in the 1960s included "The Dirty Dozen" and "Guns of the Magnificent Seven."

The only performance of his that I can really remember is from Cool Hand Luke, and what I recall most about that is the homoeroticism, like how he calls the other inmates his "little sweethearts", and gets borderline onanistic lying in his bed and recounting the woman they saw while working on the chain-gang earlier. Prison film, I guess.

I remembered "The Dirty Dozen" most clearly. I only ever remember having a positive impression of one "prison film".

All I really remember from The Dirty Dozen is the recruitment scenes, with Telly Savalas doing a rather awkward impression of a down home good ol' boy, and Lee Marvin telling the black guy he should fight the Nazis because "They're the real master-race boys".

And I'm not being faecitious when I say that this is probably the prison movie I have the clearest memories of.
