This is pretty common in Asia.

The percentage of fake credentials by Koreans and foreigners is actually quite high.

A few years ago, I skimmed through approx 700 applications for a uni dept. position, nearly 1/3 had questionable credentials that were easily identifiable as fake.

During the large scale scandals in the mid 2000's, approx 10% of the local population was found to have a fake credential. The number among foreigners was also significant. A particularly embarrasing incident regarding a bellboy who faked his degree and got a uni job publicly showed how inept the locals were here and weren't able to realize he didn't know anything.

Even businessmen and executives at banks had fake credentials and resorted to scams. After being discovered, one executive was found on a Chinese fishing boat heading to China with 2 suitcases full of money. The level of corruption and lack of integrity in the 'professional' community here is staggering.

In countries where the ability to check is greatly limited, it's far higher. China claimed possibly 40% of the degrees were fake. Then again, nearly everything in China is fake or from a legitimate degree mill.

Of course it is going to be a problem when they are still using verification processes from 50 years ago. Anyone with half decent computer skills can make and print fake degrees and transcripts, why places in Asia still ask for them is completely beyond me. ALL western universities offer degree and transcript verification via electronic PDF services these days. If schools really cared about the verification of their employees, they would use this instead of rejecting a real, up to date system for an archaic one.

I was at the uni with the bellboy. The admin's embarrassment was compounded by his "publications" for which they had doled out 20 million won.

To have as a novelty, sure, I would consider obtaining some sort of diploma/certificate.

But, to publicly advertise this on Craigslist, while at the same time, declaring discretion?

One has to speculate whether or not this is some sort of set up.
