I went swimming this weekend at an outdoor pool in Incheon.

Description

1. Bumper pool.
2. Swimming in Korea is similar to packing 40 people into a teacup.
3. Very high flesh to water ratio.
4. Side note: Young boys were urinating everywhere... except the bathroom.

Went to a big pool complex thingie vaguely near Gangnam Station. The kids pools were insanely crowded but there was one gloriusly kid free pool where there was enough space to swim around relatively freely and even do a little diving (although even on the deep in it was only a little over my head Sad ).

The only downsides were the surreal enforced 10 minute an hour breaks and the horrific sunburn I ended up with (should have sprung for the 20,000 35 stuff instead of the cheap 20 strength stuff).

Unless you swim at the beach.

I've been doing an awful lot of swimming lately. Both here on the second largest island off the southeast coast as well as on nearby Namhae Island and farther afield Wando region.

Most of the best beaches are surprisingly free of swimmers. However, the most popular beaches I've been visiting can get pretty crowded.

In general, Koreans like to splash around in shallow water rather than actually swim. So I just go out a little farther.

In general, Koreans go in the water in the middle of the day. So, you can go earlier or later in the day.

Do they really make you take ten minute breaks?

Yup and the clear out the 4 (I think it was 4) different pools all at the same time and then let everyone back in again at once.

We did that at the company rec pool back home when I was a kid. A pain in the rear, to be sure, but not all that strange and unusual.
