I recently received a payout from life insurance after the passing of my father and wanted to deposit it here. However, because it's more than $10,000, the bank told me that I had to have it cleared by customs. Does anyone have any experience with trying to clear a check of that size?

Yeah deposit it in a bank back home, then transfer it here. The transfer will take longer (my lump sum of $24k bakc home to pay student loans took 6 business days) but the bank does all the work on the paperwork you just sign your name where you have to. Since you are doing the reverse you may need to authorize someone back home to go to the bank and do it for you or do oversees phone banking or online banking.
