It seems Erdogan has arrested thousands of non military people. I'm not sure the coup involves teachers, scientists, reporters, etc. Whatever sympathy I have for backing the democratically elected leader, he seems to be using this coup as an excuse to eliminate whole classes of citizens who simply oppose him politically.

One good thing about this coup is that it makes if far more difficult for anyone to advocate in favor of Turkey joining the EU.

Yeah Turkey joining the EU is a whole lot of intertwined polite fictions. Lots of "Christian" Europe isn't comfy with having a Muslim member. But no one is very comfortable saying that outright. Of course, Turkey can join if it meets the standards. (Whispers: please don't work too hard to meet those standards.) Turkey sure doesn't want the EU influencing policy. What. We can't execute people? But it wants to save face by pretending like it too is invited to the ball. Greece sure doesn't want pretty much its mortal enemy joining. But politically it needs to play nice.

So anything that can move Turkish membership onto an even more back back burner is probably welcomed by all sides.

The good news is that Erdogan does not really seem to support Saudi-financed Wahhabi establishments.

Mustafa Ataturk is rolling in his grave now. The military has been neutered, and it looks like Turkey is headed to becoming a non-secular muslim state.
