|

Hi Everyone,
Subject to availability of flights, I'm planning on taking a short trip home to Canada at the beginning of August. A concern I have, however, is that my passport (Canadian) expires at the end of November. My E2 and Alien card are consequently only valid through November too. My contract ends next February. Renewing my passpport and extending my visa and Alien card is theoretically no problem.
BUT, if I leave the country, will immigration let me re-enter with a passport that is only valid for 4 more months? Keep in mind I do have a valid E2 and Alien card.
Must I renew my passport before going home?
Any advice is appreciated! |

My visa & alien card out-age my passport, but they dont expire with it. You shoud be fine. Look into passport renewal when you get back.
If youre still worried, phone the embassy. |

Good idea. I'll try calling the Embassy tomorrow. If they don't know, then I'll have a co-worker call immigration.
Just took a look - my E2 and Alien card indeed expire with my passport. That's not actually my concern though. My main concern is that Korean immigration will not let me re-enter with a passport valid for less than 6 months. I'm hoping that my valid E2 and ARC will override this?!... |

That's very odd because it's my understanding from reading Korean visa sites (for a few years) that you can't get a visa if your passport isn't valid for the term of the contract(visa).
I would advise getting your passport renewed before leaving korea or at least checking into it with your embassy. |

If you do this then you just have to pop into immigration with both passports and have them stamp your work visa into the new passport. I don't think there was any charge. |

I've been there, and I had no problem getting back into the country with 3 months left on my passport. As long as you have a E-2 work visa, that overrides your passport problem. If they ask at immigration about your passport renewal, tell them you will do it very soon, and it will be taken care of before your passport expiration date.
My biggest problem was convincing the Air Canada check in guy that it was okay. He said they couldn't allow me to go, and I had to ask for his supervisor, who said it was no problem. Still, I worried so much on the flight back to Korea that I couldn't sleep. No problem getting through immigration here though, didn't even look at me funny. Good luck!!! |
