I read an article about a camp in Cheolwon, near the N. Korean border, on the Korea Herald website. Anyway, I met the guy organizing it and they had talked about 1.2-1.5 mil for the camp. So while the other people got there by bus, I took my car because I didn't want to be stranded out there. They tell me that the camp is now just two days as we meet and eat dinner, so I think two whole working days is worth at least 400,000, maybe 600,000 if they're nice. Then I check the net that night and find out that they put a second ad and they're paying just 100,000 for two whole days at the camp. Two eight-hour days at 50,000 a day, that's like about 6,250 won per hour. The guy then tells me, "You don't have to teach or anything though, just be there." The whole thing was misleading, dishonest and totally unprofessional. So my advice to camp people is don't do the camps unless you get a good chunk of the cash up front. And make them define exactly what you have to do and what you're getting paid for. I notice a lot of these camp people are making you stay all day and night, "but you just get paid for your three teaching hours a day" or something like that. In my opinion, many of these camps are a complete ripoff and try to exploit the newbies coming from abroad. Watch your back and ask many, many questions folks. And make sure if you do a camp that you walk away with a nice chunk of change, not just a few coins, "some nice dinners and sightseeing," and that's it.
