I have played a few games with students so far. One was Taboo because we learned a lot of vocabulary about the differences between British English and American English words. So at the end I had made a print out with all the vocabulary and words they weren't allowed to say underneath each word. So, trousers for example they weren't allowed to say wear, leg or the American word pants. It worked quite well. So what games do you know which go nicely together with the focus of the lesson? Laughing

I've never understood why people use taboo in a TEFL context. Defining a word is a useful skill and worth practicing but why make it more difficult than it is already? Devise a defining game but let the students use any words they want just as they would be able to in real life.

As for games in general I remember the suggestion on English Droid about this which was just play normal games like Monopoly but crow bar grammar into them. E.g. When a student lands on a square they have to say 'I have landed on The Old Kent Rd' to practice present perfect etc...

If this is the best use of your class time, then you might consider working harder on lesson plans.

I don't do games that often. It's just one of about 3 games I've done which worked well as it enhanced memory and learning of the vocabulary just learned. It was done AFTER the break, that is, after the main lesson focus. Have you even done a CELTA I wonder? Shocked

The monopoly game seems as though it would work well for pre-intermediate students but it's a bit boring after 5 mins them all saying "I've landed on Old Kent Rd"

If you've got an advanced class you can choose words that are more difficult to define. That way you're still keeping the context related to real life.

The Monolpoly idea was just a joke.

It was related to real life; they learnt clothes, buildings/shops, things around the house etc. Look mate, I just found the game on an ESL website and I am telling you it worked really well. If you don't want to use it, then don't. You have to do something at the end of a lesson to enhance learning and then do a review (well a review is stipulated in my school's handbook so I have to do a review for 5-10 mins just to check the students know what they have learned in the lesson). Although some of them are quite advanced at speaking, they hardly knew any of the American-English vocabulary. Even I never knew Americans call suspenders what we call braces. Our suspenders are somewhat different Wink

The Monolpoly idea was just a joke.
Why bother posting jokes. I thought as much really. Do you even know any games?

Why would I waste my time with that?

As for wasting class time playing hangman or whatever nonsense you're up to, vocab doesn't require a teacher; students can learn vocab on their own, at home.

Inappropriate postings have just been deleted. The days of insulting other members on this board are over. I kid you not. Repeats of same will result in permanent banning along with one's ISPs.
