I had to leave a job in Korea after 6 months. But I got a letter of release, and found a new job in Seoul, in a large chain hagwon. They have given me okay accommodation, but I am concerned about the legalities. For example, as I understand it, if you leave a job early (for whatever reason) you get just 2 weeks to find a job. I got a job relatively quickly on the edge of Seoul. So far so good. But the problem is that I have been here several days with no contract. The recruiter said I would sign the contract on Monday, at the interview. But that did not happen. I have been at the school a couple of days, working without a contract. I was promised a contract by the school director on Wednesday, but it had not been prepared. I asked about it today. The director said that she had sent the paperwork off on Wednesday, but they are still waiting for the head office's seal which they need before I can get the contract. It's now Thursday. The director promises the contract will be ready by tomorrow. But I am not sure if I can believe her.
The director said that an appointment has been made for me at Seoul Immigration Office and she showed me on the computer screen. She said that we won't be able to go to the Immigration Office in Seoul until September 13th, because all appointments are full until then. I called the Immigration helpline, 1345, and they said that this is correct. The lady on the immigration helpline said that I am safe if I have a contract. But what if I don't get the contract tomorrow? In that case, I may have to do a midnight run, because my former school has now informed the authorities.
