|
|
Hello all
I just got my 120 hour TEFL certification online. Now I am ready to get over to Korea (I'm currently in Canada). There is one odd thing, the company who is taking care of the placement for me (the same company I got my TEFL with) is telling me that I will be told where I am going to be placed upon arrival. This seems pretty unusual. It will be hard for me to prepare for my journey when I don't know exactly where I'm going. Is this the way it goes, or is this an odd situation?
Thanks! |

OH yeah I've heard of this little scam before, happened to 2 other guys I know. What they do is specifically not tell you where you're going is because you don't want to know...
I'll tell you exactly what's gonna happen, you'll arrive and get picked up and driven to a medium sized town. The "manager" will seem nice enough take you out your first night for drinks and ask you if you like to dance. You'll say "of course I like to dance, who doesn't?!"
Flash forward 6 months, you're male stripping in a dingy club full of Korean housewives, hooked on the Soju bottle and cant get off. If I've seen it once I've seen it a thousand times, young good looking Canadian man full of life comes to Korea to teach and ends of getting tricked into being a male prostitute.
Could be worse, you might have to work in a Kindy Hagwon....... |

lol I'm assuming you're kidding. If it makes a difference this is for work in a public school not a hagwon. I would not want to work for a hagwon. They seem sketchy. |

Yeah I'm just busting your chops a little bit, in all honesty I would try to pinpoint exactly where you are working before you get on a plane. I'm sure they have something in mind but might not want to tell you because it might be in the stix.
Keep pressing them for answers. |

How bad are the sticks anyways? I'm sure they might be cool. Everything is so connected anyways does it really matter? |

This is very dodgy since a contract with a specific employer is required to get the visa (before you fly) and the visa is tied to one location.
The ONLY exception to this is a job with EPIK where the government is the employer and you won't know where you are going until sometime during your orientation.

Wow, very insightful opinion
I'm not a huge city type person anyways, so I'll find the beauty wherever I get sent.
Also, pretty crazy: we both joined this site on the same day but 8 years apart. Just something cool I noticed lol

Interesting. That makes sense. The company that I got my TEFL through said that it was indeed a government run thing, but it didn't specify EPIK. They said I'd have to get there, go to some orientation, and they'd put me where I gotta go. So far the company I got my TEFL with (mytefl.com) has been good at communicating so I have no reason not to believe them. |

Sounds like you didn't really want your questions answered then, unless it was to hear something positive. |

I'll chip in something positive.
Over the years I've personally known dozens, maybe hundreds, who enjoyed their rural placements with EPIK, with a fair number signing on for second & third stints. This was in Gangwondo.
Odd the recruiter wouldn't mention EPIK, though there are a couple provinces that run their own EPIK equivalent. Your recruiter should be forthcoming with the program name. Ask. |

I'd press for details about what this "government run thing" is. Would you be placed in a public school? Or could it be an English Village, which is a "government run thing" too. There are also academies and kindergartens that are somewhat sponsored by the government. Are they more reliable than other academies and kindergartens? Probably, but I don't know.
If the recruiter is unwilling to be specific, I wouldn't feel comfortable flying over. |
