Hello,

Sorry if this is a redundant question. Been going through the search function.

Anyway I'm bit older (40 years old to be exact) and looking for a break from working and living in the states. I do have a college degree and clean back ground.

I'm thinking about getting the 120 hours TESOL certificate but there is a MA TESOL offered at one of the local colleges. So which would be better or does not make a difference starting out?

I hear stories of the hiring practice as being well discriminatory in nature sometimes so I'm thinking how can I better my chances in finding work in South Korea.

Should I go for MA or wait later on and just test the water with the regular TESOL certificate?

I hope you understand my question.

Short answer, depends on what job you want.

For a regular hagwon/academy job, there will be age discrimination but your BA will suffice.

For many/most public school jobs, TESOL certificate is preferable, as is teaching experience, but not a deal-breaker.

If you're looking to get a uni job, MA is pretty necessary.

Depends. Have you ever taught before? Do you know if it's something you like to do? Do you like working with little kids (some as young as 4 years old) or do you want to work with older students or even adults?

Have you lived abroad before? Have you picked up everything and moved far from your long-time home? Do you have a reason for picking Korea (family here, friends here, etc.)?

I am also older, and I work with the younger students (aged 5 to 12). There are plenty of schools like mine that only require B.A. degrees and a pulse. You already qualify. Don't waste your money on either option you mentioned until you know what you want to achieve.

I'm Korean American and I am married to a native Korean woman. Right now we live in NYC but we are thinking of living in South Korea to be closer to her family .

I figure before we make the move back I should look at my choices in the job market. There is ESL but I am aware of the fly by night hagwons and the discriminatory practice that the recruiters do.

The only teaching experience I have is with WANY which is volunteer English conversation for nonnative speakers here in New York City. It was mostly adults.

You're going to be able to get a Gyopo F-series visa, so a hagown will probably want to employ you as an independent contractor. Therefore, they:

won't want to provide your flight over or your return flight
won't pay your insurance
won't pay housing or an allowance

The upside is that you have a ton more experience dealing with Korea and Koreans, and with your wife's help, you'll have few problems adjusting.

With the TESOL cert, you might be ablet to get a public school job. Those might have more perks (insurance/housing) than hagwon jobs.

Best of luck...
