Hi all

I work for a hagwon and need help with an issue to see if I'm being reasonable or not.

My hagwon has two events in February, a school play and graduation ceremony two weeks apart and they have put them both on a Saturday from 11am-4pm. I asked them if I will get overtime for this and they said that they wouldn't give overtime and that they are compulsory for all teachers, but they would give me the morning off for two days further on.

I really don't want to work on a Saturday, especially not without pay and I would rather still work the weekday mornings that they offered me off. Also my contact states that I only work Monday-Friday and doesn't mention anything about weekends. I do work less than the weekly hours in my contact though so I'm not sure if I'm being unreasonable or not asking to be paid overtime.

Please give me any help or opinions. The hagwon has been really good to me and this is the only real issue I have ever had.

Thanks

Personally I advise you stop complaining and asking to be paid OT. It isn't entirely fair, especially as not mentioned in the contract, but this stuff is pretty standard for big events like graduation when parents want to attend.

Plus, you generally work less hours than in your contract, they treat you well otherwise and they are offering time off in lieu. That's three things a lot of hagwon workers never experience.

It reads like you are being treated well overall. I recommend doing them the favor of showing up for the events. It will make you and the school look good.

Salaried employee or hourly worker?

If you are paid a monthly salary and do not exceed your contractual obligations then overtime is not mandated under law.

IF you are an hourly paid employee (only get paid for work done) then it is an issue.

On a more practical side... if they otherwise treat you well.... These types of events are common here and at home and are almost never paid a supplemental pay.
8 or 10 hours over a 1 year contract... for some special events... Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

It's only 5 hours, two Saturdays, and they're spread out. You don't work the max teaching load to begin with, and they're giving you a couple of mornings off, something that a lot of places wouldn't necessarily do.

I'd say just put on a happy face and do it. Flexibility here goes a long way toward building good faith. And, hey, it won't get in the way of a proper pubbing at any rate!
