I'd be more worried about slow damage from air pollution personally. Which is ample reason to gtfo in my my opinion. |

If I were still there, I would definitely make some contingency plans. There have been many threats of massive destruction made before by NK, but now we've got two volatile leaders opposing each other and now playing a game of nuclear chicken ...

On Tuesday, North Korea warned of “catastrophic consequences” in response to any further provocations by the US, days after the Carl Vinson began its journey towards the Korean peninsula.
“We will hold the US wholly accountable for the catastrophic consequences to be entailed by its outrageous actions,” North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency quoted a foreign ministry spokesman as saying. “[North Korea] is ready to react to any mode of war desired by the US.”

China just positioned 150,000 troops along the N.K. border. Get ready for a won slide. Grrrrr.... |

The world is perhaps on the verge of a nuclear confrontation and your focus is on the possibility of the KRW depreciating? |

Chinese troop movements TOWARD N. Korea are indicative of an incursion or pre-emptive strike NOT happening. Odds are they're just helping, finally, to ratchet up pressure on Dear Meatball, getting him to think that IF the US does doe something, the population won't be able to go streaming across the border.
And IF the US does do something, it also sends a message that China is more concerned with the probable regime change than anything else should N. Korea in any way retaliate.
Times like this, though, S. Korea may step in to prop up the won. Remains to be seen to what, if any, impact that may have. Looks more like a rollercoaster ahead, but the under 1,100 mark seems a ways away for now. |

Like PR Magic said. Nothing is going to happen. China put troops on the NK Border to stop fleeing refugees. Everything is just posturing and will be over in a month I'm sure. The won did go down a little, but that's to be expected. Life will continue as usual in May. |

The U.S. has to decide relatively quickly now if it wants a North Korea to exist with the capability of lobbing a nuke at Alaska or eventually further. |

Seems the Chinese are reading the tea leaves somewhat differently:

NK just attempted a missile launch that failed.
This is not good.
Mr. Kim is playing a very dangerous game. |

It's all dodge and tickle. China sent their top nuclear negiator to NK. To what end remains to be seen. Again, posturing.
Coal exports shut down? So what. They had pretty much reached agreed upon limits anyway, so no news there. Trade between NK and China in the first quarter, however, is UP. Posturing.
It is in China's benefit to try and look like the adult on the block over here, particularly as they're seeking to increase their sphere of influence while not ruffling too many (more) feathers for the extra-territorial build up.
They could give a rat's arse about the actual regime in power in NK. All they want is a buffer state between democratic SK (and therefore the US) and their eastern border, prefereabley one that leans socialist.
IF the US intervenes, and IF there is regime change, China wins by protecting its border, stepping in to smooth regime change, and then taking credit when the new regime actually opens up to world economically, thereby lifting millions out of dire poverty. It'll say that the success was generated by the new NK regime following the 'Chinese model'.
Just in case, I'd suggest finding out which subway stations also act as bomb shelters and making sure you're registered with your embassy. |
