Hi all!
I just need a bit of advice from those in the know and kind enough to provide it.
I hold a F6 visa and I recently started working for a school on August 29th 2016.
The contract states that i will be paid on the 20th of each month, and the contract expires on August 28th 2017.
It looks like they are not going to pay me until October 20th, because i have not worked a full month. That will be almost 8 weeks after starting and even then, it will only be a months salary. They are also saying that my final pay will be received the month after i have finished the contract i.e. September 20th 2017 (after the contract has expired!!) This just blows my mind.
Every job i have had in Korea to date has paid me my monthly salary during the first month, regardless of whether i have worked a full month or not.
What do you guys think about this? Is this normal? Legal? I'm strongly considering to leave this company.
Sorry if it doesn't make much sense, it's late!
Cheers all. |

It is neither normal nor is it legal.
It is in fact in direct violation of the labor standards act which states paid every 30 days and it is illegal to withhold salary.
Talk once then walk.

Yeah 20th for the previous 1st to 30/31/27/28 is extra strange. Most places are the 5th or 10th so at most it would be 6 weeks plus 3 days. |

On 20th September, did they not pay you for the 3 days you worked in August? 20th of the month is super late for payday, but as far as your September salary goes, it's okay for them to pay that month's salary on 20th October. It's not okay for them to withhold the pay for the 3 days you worked in August until October 20th.
Everywhere works their pay days differently - I'm paid on the last banking day of each month for that month, I know people who are paid on 15th of each month for the previous month etc. |

Hi all.
I would just like to provide a much belated update to this posting. I am now over 8 months into this contract and looking forward to finishing at the end of August.
I sorted out my problem by calling the company and letting them know that what they were doing was not legal and I would walk away from the company without this being sorted. After a few minutes of conversation they paid me in full for the first month and have paid me on time ever since.
I still hear other teachers in the company complain about their pay being kept for the first month, so it would seem that this is not something they are willing to change.
Cheers for your help and advice. |
