This is a first. In my office/classroom, I have my own computer (property of the school of course). I've been using it for 6 years. There have been times in the past where the computer had issues, malware, viruses, and I cleaned it out no problems.
But 3 days ago I got malware where these naughty photo ads pop up everywhere you go whether to google homepage or other sites, there would be ads of scantily clad women around.
I got the computer reformatted anyways as it was due and now everything is fine. Today, apparently office of education (province) contacted my school and sent them a page showing the problem....it has my IP address and a few lines of messages that shows 'trojan' this and 'trojan' that.
I had no idea that when 1 computer gets malware, it would somehow get reported to the office of education. My CT told me they can now monitor all computers. I suspect it's not so much a big brother thing where they are spying on you. It's more of a new program they install on every computer and if that computer picks up anything fishy, the software will send data to the office of education. Then they will take a look at it and contact your school to tell them that "xxx"'s computer needs to get checked out.
Has anyone ever had this happen to you? I had no idea it was such a big deal that they now send notices to schools when 1 computer with your IP address has malware. |

No, it's not happened to me, but it could. It could happen to anyone.
Here's a quote from a site that might prove useful to you...your school's sysadmin can see a LOT more than you think...
Again, the post is in reference to sb else, and may not match your situation, especially if you're NOT using a vpn.
"If this is your personal computer, and the school has not had any access to it:
The IT staff can see that there is traffic, and that it is encrypted.
The IT staff can see that you're connected to VPN Reactor based on the endpoint of your connections from their networking equipment's point of view.
As long as your computer is routing all traffic over the VPN, the IT staff cannot actually see anything you're sending over over the network.
All traffic going over the VPN appears as if it's travelling to the VPN, from the IT staff's point of view.
If this is a school computer, or there is some sort of school software installed on your personal computer:
The IT staff could potentially be logging every keystroke you type, taking random screenshots, or remotely viewing your desktop, all without your knowledge.
With all of that said, you'll want to make sure you're not violating your school's policies, as it may be against the rules to circumvent their security measures. If you're not worried about that, Isaac's advice about staying under the radar is probably a good idea." |
