I am currently teaching in a hagwon in Gyeonggi-do. My plan is to complete my contract here, and apply for a job with EPIK starting next March. As some of you may know, the EPIK, GEPIK and SMOE application processes are very much more complicated than they used to be.
I remember what the application process was like a few years ago. But what does an applicant within South Korea need to prepare in September 2017? I haven't left South Korea since the start of last year. For public school jobs would I need a brand new criminal record check, notarized degree and apostilles if I am applying from within Korea? As I understand it, if I am changing jobs in-country, I can get a copy of my original documents from the immigration office and use them. I have these copies now.
But it would be nice to get clarification. |

You would if immigration or your hakwon doesn't have your criminal check and degree on file. I'd almost expect them not to. I wish I could remember how long they are good for. Is it 6 months? If you have family that can run around for you back home, that will help. If you're American, you have to run around a lot more due to some apostile treaty. In Canada, it's not signed, so the Korean embassy or consulate verifies your documents as well as shelling out a hundred bucks at a lawyers office first to verify your degree first. Your family gets them back and then Fed Exes them over to you. Maybe end of November or early December get the fam started back home just in case. You can apply for EPIK directly or just apply for specific province recruiters. I came over and held my job so never went through the long application process. (But did finally have to have my family run around for me to get these documents as we were no longer grandfathered in.)
Or, you could finish the contract, go home for a bit, chill, do the documents there (or get the family starting them for you before going home to jump start as the USA process has a crap load of bureaucracy), then apply for a recruiter provincial position directly. There always seems to be ASAP positions popping up in the middle of the semesters. |
