I moved into a sweet, brand-new officetel. The building management isn't responsible for maintenance problems (I have already had to call a plumber twice). When I move-out, will I be responsible for any damage done to the apartment? My dogs destroyed some of the molding on the stairs, as well as destroyed a large piece of the carpeting on the bottom stair (teething puppies are such a joy.......). I've been meaning to get it fixed, actually, but I haven't gotten around to it yet (I want to wait until the puppy gets his adult teeth, anyway).
Now I have a new problem- I have noticed 2 patches of mold UNDER the wallpaper, and I know it needs to be fixed ASAP. I guess I need to talk to the officetel, obviously, but does this sound right that renters should be entirely responsible for apartment maintenance? I thought that was the landlord's deal. I know it's my fault about my dogs chewing-up the stairs and all, but what about this mold? It's everywhere in Korea now, and I don't feel I should pay for this. I pay over 50,000 won a month in buliding maintence fees- doesn't this cover basic apt. maintenance, as well? |

Mold: owners responsibility.
Dog Damage:100% your responsibility.
Simple no? |

Take care of that mold!
My apt. owner handled it when I made it an issue.
That stuff grows like flames in a dry forest. Once it hits a certain size, the spores float around the room, and you've got it EVERYWHERE!
Tell your landlord now, and scrub it with bleach & water. That might at least help some. Also, your home is too damp. Either run an air con that takes out the water -- and run it often enough...
or buy a dehumidifier (Chae-Soup-Ghee).
In any event, you had better tear out that wallpaper, scrub it off with the bleach & water, and then have it all replaced. Gets under the floor too, so pull it back.
Darned mess, it is! |

You've answered your own question about paying for the dogs' damage....as for the mold? You shouldn't pay.
I had dogs in my apt. and paid for those damages....AND had mold problems. Of course, my univ. wouldn't fix the 50 square foot of mold problems for years....that is, not until I left the apt., but I still never had to pay.

A solution of 10% bleach and water will kill the mold, When I moved into my apartment last August there was mold in all the corners and all around the door. I sprayed with bleach solution and washed it with soap and bleached again it never came back.
Keep your apartment well ventilated, open windows allow circulation. That helps keep the mold away. |

There are also Korean products for removing mold if you don't like the smell of bleach. Just go in the cleaning products aisle and tell the sales assistant you need a product for 'kongpanghee'. |
