I'm aiming toward a university job in Korea in the next few years, and I'm wondering what the best approach is. I'm about to finish my first year teaching at a Chinese university, and I'll be starting a distance MA TESOL in the fall. My thoughts/questions so far:

1. Is it worth my while to send out applications this time next year? I see a lot of schools asking for BA+4; my hagwon experience puts me over that, but nobody cares about hagwon experience, right? Would being enrolled in an MA program help me at all?

2. Am I better off spending the next few years in China or in Korea? On the one hand, I like my job in China and wouldn't mind sticking around for a few years while I'm working on the degree (provided the smog doesn't kill me), especially because my hours give me plenty of time to study and my position would help me with my practicum and classroom research. I'm also concerned that any work experience I'd be qualified for in Korea would be less valuable on my CV than the university position now. On the other hand, I'm not sure how favorably Korean universities are going to look on Chinese university experience versus whatever kind of work I'd be doing in Korea (probably hagwon or unigwon, I imagine).

3. More importantly, looking ahead to when I've got the degree, say I'm still in China. Is it smarter to stay here and apply with the security of knowing I've got my current job in my back pocket, or would I need to be in Korea to get any attention from universities there? Again, maybe a unigwon job for a year to get myself reestablished in Korea?

Thanks for any advice!

I would probably continue working a few years at a Chinese university so you can put on your resume that you have the MA plus experience.
