For those of you who have stayed on for a second year, what kind of inducements did your employer offer? What percentage of a raise did you get? Did you sign another year contract and get another flight and bonus? If not, were you compensated with extra money tacked onto your monthly pay?

Its all in one word: negociation.

Use it.

Results vary according to negociating ability, your track record at the school, your school and current economics.

You should be able to get at least a 200 000 raise a month. Getting airfare is normal, but if you're not going home between contracts, try for a signing bonus to replace the airfare you're saving them. Ask for more holidays, 15 days should be minumum. If they're scheduled holidays (ie. one week summer, one winter) ask for five individual days spread throughout the year. It's not a bonus; it's severance and it has to be paid by law. After twelve months, severance becomes pro-rated and you don't have to do twelve more months to earn it. eg. 18 months = 18/12 x monthly salary.

But negociation is key: your boss isn't going to offer anything he doesn't have to.

If the school wants you to stay on then negotiations will go relatively well.

Beware though, negotiating a contract here seems to be a completely foreign concept and the fact that you may reject what's offered and make a counter will be frowned upon by wongjangnim.

Regardless, let him know that it's called negotiation for a reason and that you both counter to reach something that both of you can live with.

Be firm but don't go overboard with your demands.

200,000 a month may be a bit much but if you can get then great. I personally managed a 300,000 a month increase over my second year to my third year. If you can't get at least 100,000 then you've got to re-evaluate your hogwon and see if there are other pluses that would keep you besides the money. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

On that note, it never hurts to look around and get an offer or two on the table to show how much you are worth to another employer.

Cheers and good luck

A very wise piece of advice here.

Follow that.
