I started to notice that even the kids who pay the least attention seem intent on making sure they have the right answer circled or written down in their textbook.
"Teacher what was the right answer to question 3?"
At first I think "well if you weren't looking at your cell phone/comic book/sparkly pen/etc you would have heard the right answer in the first place." But then I think "okay their desire to learn is a bit latent so patience. They must be taking notes to review later."
After a conversation with my boss about how paranoid some parents are about textbooks and making sure the kids have textbooks for every course, I realized what these kids were up to. They didn't really care about the answer or later review. They just wanted something down in their textbook because their parents would be checking every night. "What did you do? Let me see your books." If they don't have anything down, they get a home style beating.
