Hi everybody! I took a dog in for a friend who couldn't cope with the dog. It was just a temorary arrangement while I tried to find another family for the dog. I posted on the buy/sell/trade forum, and I only had 1 respose. It worked-out, thankfully, and everybody's happy!
I adopted a dog from a student at my former hakwon- there was a pool of 250+ students, so I knew someone, at some point, was going to need to find a new home for their dog for whatever reasons. If you are giving away a dog/looking for a dog, I really recommend that you post a notice in your school, on each floor, in the elevator, bathrooms, etc. My notice was written in English and Korean, and I think you will have more response if it's in Korean. I told the other teachers about it, and they made announcements in the classrooms. The kids were really interested in trying to help me- it was cool.
Also, you could talk to your vet or maybe even a pet store. Maybe the pet store could re-sell the animal, but that's just an idea. Vets/dog groomers usually know of other people who are looking for pets, or are willing to rescue a pet so it's not put down or abandoned. My vet told me about a foreign teacher who had her dog euthanized just because she couldn't take her dog back home with her, and I guess she couldn't find someone to take the dog.
I also think you should plan ahead. If I needed to find a home for one of my dogs, I would give myself at least 2 months to find a new family for my dog. You could work something out, saying you aren't looking to give the animal away right now, but on a specific date in the future.
I would love to start an animal rescue league here, but financially I can't right now! I hope this is helpful for somebody! |
