|
|
Year-round english camp, new purpose-built building with lots of resources, natural beachside setting.
4 native speakers & Korean support staff. 40 students attend for one week, varying session-by-session between grades 5 & 6 elementary, 1 & 2 middleschool.
Teachers teach in the morning & participate in activities in the afternoon, 9-5, monday to friday. Emphasis on fun with modest learning outcomes. Take turns one evening a week helping with an evening activity & all 4 are expected to attend the closing party friday evening. Overtime pay for evening work.
Pay & benefits commensurate with epik or public schools.
Students attend every other week but teachers are required to be at the facility during those off-weeks, doing the 9 to 5. Doing what, is a big question. Some prep, sure, but what else might be productive & fend off boredom? Its meant to be an easy week.
Thats the bare bones of it & I've been asked for my input. Whats wrong with this scenario? How might it be reconfigured? There are good intentions & secure funding behind this but theres a lack of experience in setting it up.
Any ideas? |

Toyed with this idea myself (for the far future) as an offshoot of my hagwon (in the not too far future).
Right now I'll say that your teachers will resent being there when they aren't working. Instead, have them work all day during the work week and give them the next week off. |

Agreed. I think it would feel like prison to be stuck to the office for a 40-hr week. No one would care what you did (surfing the net, writing the next great novel, napping, etc) but for most folks that would wear thin pretty fast. But I dont think a twice-monthly trip to Thailand is on. This is the dilemma. |

Korean? I like that notion! A Korean staffer could offer classes & it might be a nice incentive for motivated foreigners. A teach & learn program .. |

Thinking further on that -- that sounds really sellable. I think the people & resources would be on hand to develop a Korean language program for the down weeks. Theres always a small contingent inquiring on Daves about studying Korean -- this could be a nice way to do so & make a good wage at the same time. |

During the school year, are kids really able to attend a one-week camp? They have regular school to attend... |

No problem. It'll be govt-authorized. |

I would be in on it for the language training, I'm always wondering how to fit in proper language training into my usual work week. |

Thanks for your input folks. Anyone else any thoughts?
Another question. What might you name such a program?
Blahblah English Camp sounds a bit Konglish, especially since its year-round deal in a permanent building. English Town, English Village, English Zone, etc have already been much-used. How about English Retreat? English Lodge? (That one's problematic, it would be Englishee Lodgee.) Or?
I thought of selling them on "Week in English" but that would just be cruel. |
