in the university setting, how strong of a relationship do you believe there is between the students evaluation of a teacher and the actual quality of the teacher's teaching ability?

The great conundrum. . .

Depends on the teacher.

If you have a clear teaching/learning philosophy that students accept you can teach really badly and it'll be okay. If you have a great teaching/learning philosophy that students don't accept you can teach well but it'll be bad.

You can either give them what they want (cater to what they think teaching/learning is) or bring them to accept what you think learning/teaching is (or a bit of both).

Agreed. I think that if they walk out of the classroom every day believing that they learned something, your evaluations will be good.

This may or may not coincide with them actually learning.
