Can someone help to explain why recruiters and schools always seem to call at the worst hours? Since I've been in contact (and I'm sure many other calls are unsolicited) with schools and recruiters, I've given them my preferred hours of receiving phone calls. However, I've been receiving phone calls at 1am, 3am, 5am, you name the ungodly hour, and I've probably received a phone call at that time. I work a 9-5 job during the week, so answering the phone has never been an option. What's the deal, and does this mean that I have to succomb to the ritual of unplugging my phone before bed? Mad

It's because 3 am in New York is 2 pm in Korea. They're calling during Korean business hours. You need to tell them times that are good to call you when you send your resume or post it online. Try telling them 9pm to 11pm U.S. Eastern Standard time. Then they'll make sure to call you early in the morning their time.

That's a big-ass bridge! Laughing

Seriously, I had to spell it out for a couple of recruiters. I need you to call me between 6-10 in the evening. That's between 9am and 1 pm Korean time. They finally got it. Its not the end of the world where I live, but you can see it from here.

Yeah,

I had a guy call me at 4:00 AM to tell me that he had a job for me and that he had to know right now if I wanted the job or not because he was going to call 2 other teachers if I didn't. He added the fact that they work Saturdays as well (even though it said Mon-Fri on the posting). Being tired and out of my mind, I said "yes". He then sent me an email welcoming me to the school, telling me about the teachers and that the supervisor and boss would contact me as well...later that day as I realized what a ridiculous thing I had agreed to and trying to think of how to weasel my way out, I was then saved by another email claiming that the school had made "other arrangements".

The guy was Canadian too so he knew what time he was calling me. I believe it is a tactic used to trick people into agreeing to not so agreeable conditions. I'll agree to almost anything to shut someone up so I can get back to sleep.

Hello mutt: Don't change the avatar it's a classic. As for the phone calls there are 2 possibilities. 1) They are stupid and incompetent at their jobs and dont realize they are waking people up. This is possible but even Wink any dodgy agent knows Eastern Standard Time. Chalk it up to idiocy. Forgivable maybe but be suspicious. They might know exactly what they are doing.

2) They want to see how you react to abuse. The job is an endless stream of them telling you what to do and they want to see how you react to it.

If you work 9-5 you want them to call at 8-10 at night. Am I wrong? That is early morning Korea time and sensible., Find out who is calling in the middle of the night and tell them to eff off -simple. Be wary of people doing this---they are stupid and incompetent or nasty and in either case you don't want to work for them.

Mutt,

Kangnamdragon is just doing his job.

If you think he's powertripping, you should really reconsider whether or not you really want to work in Korea.

Don't tell them what time you want them to call where you are. Give them a Korean time to call you.
