|

http://www.police.go.kr/eng/statistics/staGeneral_01.jsp
While perusing the KNP website, I came across this interesting statistic:
From 1998 to present time 70% of onduty deaths were a result of "overwork" while 22% where caused by traffic accidents.
The "overwork" diagnosis threw me for a loop. It got me thinking,
1) Are the families of the deceased happy with this diagnosis?
2) Maybe (just maybe) we in the west look at things with too large a microscope. Maybe when our fellow humans are diagnosed with heart failure, pulmonary embolism, stroke, etc etc we should take a step back and say, he was worked to death.
Sure "worked to death" could be a great layman's term for a diagnosis, but to post it on an official gov't website gives it some weight... it should anyways.
One final thought: If you don't believe "overwork" is a valid diagnosis, than what exactly ARE 70% of the KNP dying of!!
Makes me think of the whole "fan death" diagnosis. Can you imagine the size of my eyes if a doctor where to determine the death of one of my loved ones was due to a fan? (all that aside, when I go to sleep at night with only my fan blowing and my room completely closed, it does cross my mind to crack a door or window .... just in case ) |

Yep...driving around chasing bribes is rough, not to mention extorting the poor girls in the red-light (pink light?) areas to beep the eyes of the law blind.
Sorry...very tasteless and heartless comment, but from what I have seen of the police here, overwork is not what comes to mind, and even more fantastic, dying from it. |

No doubt,
A good follow up, read an article in the Korean Times this morning descibing the international communities dissapointment in the KNP's inability in not only preventinga home invasion of the Belgian Ambassador's home when guards are posted two meters from the front door, but the ambassador and his wife remained bound in their house for over 7 hours. The KNP only realized a crime took place when a housemaid told their driver who then walked outside and told the guards.
Of course the article alludes to the old news of corruption also.
Now I'm not bashing the KNP, in their defense -- the intruder was an ex-employee of the house, who would know how to circumvent the safeguards.
I've had two pretty positive experiences with the local KNP.
How about the rest of you? Have your experiences with the KNP been negative or positive? |
