Without exaggerating it seems 60% of my elementary students (equal parts male and female) play this game on a regular basis. I did an internet search and it seems this particular game has had absolutely no Western/English appeal. So what is it? I saw a picture once and it looked like an RPG, but then some student told me it was a "shooting" game (but then why the hell would all the girls play it?). I also asked if it was an MMORPG (like Lineage) which would explain why they play it constantly (most single player games end after a week or so) but they said it wasn't. So what the hell is this mysterious all-encompassing passtime?

yes, what is it? my students go on about it as well.

and, incidentally, girls like the shooting games just as much as the boys. most of the computer games they play seem to be that sort of weird, cartoony, gender-neutral type of stuff. they appeal to both genders, from what i can tell.

but what is it with maple story??

I think it is an RPG. with endless levels. You pick a character- wizard, archer, etc and go. The characters gain power and gather magic stuff, etc. Dungeons and Dragons but you play one character not a team. Archer sounds tough.

maple story is an RPG, adventure game....like some many that are here.

What is it with this, and Diablo, baramenara, Lineage, Starcraft, Warcraft, etc.

These games bore me to tears.

Whenever i tell mt students I like driving or sport games they look at me in disbelief(unless of course if it is Smackdown).

I'm loving WRC 2003 at the moment Very Happy

Their disdain/inability for individuality passes into most all realms, video games included. I was so pissed when I finally got my computer shipped over here to find an absolutely fantastic game, Unreal Tournament 2004, a huge smash in the West, has 1 existing Korean server (and I think that is an army base one). Then I find there are literally millions playing a game that is 8 years old (and not even that good) just because everyone else is doing it... ugh.

Seriously - in the States you can choose from hundreds of popular games in any given month. Here you can count on one hand the popular (able to play online against people) games, and most of them are more than 3 years old.

A country on the brink of war for 40 or so years is probably more interested in teamwork and everyone being on the same page than those of us with the relative luxury of living in NA, Europe, Russia, China or India for example. Horrific terrorist threats aside, we are not likely to be invaded anytime soon. And any invasion is unlikely to sweep the entire country in mere weeks or nuke/gas it in hours. Just MHO.

maple story is an rpg, kid's game

I play Warcraft3 TFT constantly, its the best game on the market.

Not many people play unreal tournament (I couldn't get into it either), counterstrike and rainbow6 are the prefered first person shooter game in Korea.

check out the world cyber games 2004 if your into gaming.

Why is it called Maple Story? Do you have to collect sap as one of the prizes or something and make fudge?

Thanks, I had visited that site before (for another RPG I saw advertised on the subway) and didn't want to download the possible adware crap that popped up. I did it today (god save my computer) and looked around a bit. unfortunately no english. anyone who is interested, here is the game's site, with some screenshots.

Now that's funny! "Maple Story is neither maple nor is it a story, talk amongst yourselves."

'Maple Story' is part of the vast Korean conspiracy to provide school children with an endless array of crap that they can take into the classroom to distract them from actually learning anything. This week my classes were all overrun with kids in possession of Maple Story flip books. I f***ing hate the constant stream of fads that this semi-retarded country latches onto.

I had a lot of those flip books in my classes as well.
If there wasn't computer games there is always some crap to talk about.

I'm sure in Josoen dynasty they were talking about their work in the rice crop or how much Kimchi there will be made.

There is always a distraction if you want there to be

I've actually banned the kids from downloading and playing Maple Story on the computers at our school. Even though it's not Maple Story itself that does it, the kids tend to download other things related to it that load spyware and a few viruses on our machines.

Maple Story itself has a few RPG/multiplayer qualities, but it is basically a platform game on the same par with Super Mario Bros. The graphics are better than the NES, but like many Korean video games I see here, they look like they were made ten years ago. I tried to play Maple Story and got very bored with it. I prefer Warcraft and Starcraft.
