I want to buy speakers for my laptop so I can use it as my primary music system while in Korea, but after looking around a little (in Canada) I can't find anything that is sweet. I was hoping to find speakers that rivaled my wicked Athena's I use with my home stereo but no dice. Am I a fool for assuming that you can only use "computer oriented speakers" for my laptop or is it possible to hook up my home speakers to it (if so HOW????). If I do need to buy different types of speakers, what is good, bad, and ugly? When buying, should I wait till I get to Korea, or buy in Canada before I leave?

I feel lost. Please help. Thank you.

Dude, there are some wicked sound systems avaliable for computers.

http://www.buildorbuy.org/speakers.html#speakbrands

All the big names are here, you just have to choose and pay. Get some Bose, JBL, Cerwin-vega, Klipsch...all have computer speakers.

These would be nice...

I am no longer a Demo "phobe" I am a Demo "lover." Thanks for the insight brother, I'll spend my money readily but wisely. When I get to Korea I'll play you some kiss arse tunes.

Demophobe, what type of speakers do you use? I was perusing the Klipsch line of products and they seem to know what they are doing, any recommendations? Or anyone else for that matter?

Well, being in Korea, "The land of the close proximity", I didn't bother getting kick-butt speakers. I use Cambridge sound 5.1. Not bad...middle-of-the-road.

I did however, invest in a very nice set of headphones(Sennheiser HD 600 for composing, Zalman 5.1 for gaming) , as my composing and gaming is just too loud for my building, especially given the hours when I tend to work and play.

Late. Very late. Wink

I have seen some REALLY NICE setups in the audio area at Yongsan. Pro studio stuf.....*drools* Razz

Take a stroll through there when you come...I'm sure you can drop 2K in a minute.

Go with Klipsch if you can, in my opinion. I have the ProMedia 5.1s and they are great.

Oh and my Sennheiser HD477s are good for the price.

Chances are the home amp has only RCA connectors, while your PO has the stereo min-plug

get an adapter - many electronics shops have them, else try the electronics shop in yongsan (basement) - the silver colored building west of the AMD balloon

I have been wondering about this, myself, for quite a while but I have intentionally been avoiding starting a thread about it for fear that I would start to REALLY want to buy an audio system for my computer. AYE!

Stop the madness Demophobe, you have to stop making postings that make me want to buy more techno-junky drool-ware!

I just found this site and it has everything from low to high range speaker systems, well worth a perusal.

http://www.yongsanbit.co.kr/viewBigCat.php?cat=R&show=
or
http://www.speakersale.co.kr/product/product_list.asp?view_chk=cat&c_code=51

What I usually do is research what I want on an Englishy site and then find a place in Korea that has what I want and order it. Sometimes starting at a Korean site and doing some backwards research from there works as well which is why I have given you the above links. At least you can scope out your price range as it applies to Korea and work from there.

Yongsanbit also has a great selection in other computer hardware categories. I wish I had found this site earlier than now as I have been going all over the internet trying to research and compare products.

What can I expect to pay for average speakers in Yongsan? Nothing too fancy. I want easy setup. I'm not too technically literate in hardware issues (not much better software-wise).

Checkout the link in my above post, I am pretty sure that they have a store in Yongsan. The prices there are pretty much representative of the general pricing scheme in Korea. In fact, whether that link is for a store in Yongsan or not, you will not find anything more expensive in Yongsan than what is posted on that site.

Find something on the site that is in your price range and google it to get the specs in English.
