has anyone tried to do this?
there's the hard part, getting one of my guitars shipped here from canada, then the biz of buying an amp, which should be pricey but easy.
finding other members is a problem that could be solved thru numerous tiresome posts on this board that will annoy the mods and anyone who doesn't like ac/dc and the ramones.
what's next? renting practice space. has anyone tried to do this in seoul, ever? i can imagine it being either pricey as hell or cheap as chips.
anyways, thoughts? waegook-rock will wreck your day. |

I don't know much but I did walk past a rehearsal room in HongDae the other day- I'll get the link from my home PC later. I see uni students walking around the area with guitar bags all the time, seemingly on the way to/from rehearsing. Since college kids don't seem to be rolling in dough, I would speculate it's not too expensive.
In my imagination they have a house drum kit, power amps and a PA set up in the rehearsal room too. Like I say though, I'll send you the link. |

Let me know how you get on. I'd be up for some jam sessions when I finally get back to Korea.
Practice space.....I have no idea. Set up in Pagoda Park |

I wonder if these kids are using space in Hongik Uni then? Must be something in there...I assume they have a music department. |

thanks guys
consider this an invitation to rock.
i play guitar.
i like ac/dc, minor threat, the ramones, thin lizzy and i also like punching people. no "jamming", sorry.
korea has five songs on constant rotation. i want to add about five more that disrupt the continuum of utter cheese infecting the earwaves in seoul.
we will have seven fans. |

I've actually given this quite a but of thought....
Bits of information I've collected:
(Seoulmon shouts into ring: "LARGE FONT ON"
*I had a Korean friend who rented a room cheap to practice.
*Finding a venue would be really hard. One of my students was a buisnessman who did a weekend gig in Hong-ik. He does cover songs. No original songs.
*Along the southern section of Seoul there are a series of "LIVE" clubs. THey are live and they are clubs but, according to my students, these aren't quite what I had hopped. They are usually owned by aged stars who perform their old hits (kinda like Elvis in Las vegas).
*I've seen a lot of independent crap when I visited Japan. I just don't see that in Seoul.

there's a ton all over Seoul. I've been playin with a group for the past year and a half, and we've practiced in places all over Seoul. The prices aren't too bad. i think the most expensive was 10,000 an hour in ̴, which was a pretty nice place. Every place has amps for you to use, keyboards of mixed quality, and a drum set. You can reserve a space for any given date and time.
Hope that helps. |

Finding other members can be the interesting part. A few ideas from someone who has been and is part of a new band that is getting its crap together.
Make sure that you guys have similar musical goals, heading similar directions.
Be sure that each and every one of the members are aware of the commitment that they must put into the band. One can make money from privates, etc., but when there is practices, gigs, etc. make sure that they are solidly motivated and focus on what you are doing as a band.
In Seoul, it's easy to get around, but it can be hard for some to remain focused due to so many disstractions. Be sure that members of the band have the self-control to not get plastered when they need to be alert and awake to do their work. Be sure that they're eating and sleeping right. If not, it's only a matter of time that they get soar throats, sick, colds, etc. Remember, the Seoul air pollution is about a 2 pack a day habit in itself. We're talking simply breathing, here.
BTW, I've been a lucky bum. Most of the people that I've worked with over the years have been very solid. Just don't get the need for companionship mixed up with putting together a terrific band. Yes, you will definitely find the companionship you need from bandmates~ without question. Just be sure you hold out and get the quality that you need to make it work. Remember, try to get at least one awesome songwriter and one awesome singer. I hope this makes sense to you. Not sure if it will help much, but good luck.
Anyway, all the best in your ventures.
Play hard!

BTW, I'm a lucky bum. Many of the people that I've worked with or am working with have a wonderful level of commitment. |

I saw this awesome band. It was a sax, tuba, guitar and drums. They were playing outside in-sa-dong. Their style was so creative and distinctive that they immediatly stood out. ALthough, they really wouldn't have in a place like Canada.
has anybody else seen any real cool live gigs here? |

*bump*
I've just checked back on doing this again, the website has a lot more info now, prices of the rooms are 20,000 (Room A), 15,000 (Rooms B, C) and 12,000 won (Room D) per hour.
You need to book, but this place looks quality- full drum kits, classic amps, excellent keyboards- me or Shawner will tell you how we get on.
here's the address again
