| Anybody been there, comments? Offered a job there, and want to know more about it. I can't find much on the web or in books(it is really small)! |

I visited Jindo last summer and was surprised how different it is from the island I live on on the east coast. Here on Geoje Island there's a lot of recent development, many beaches and a 40-minuite ferry to big city Busan.
On Jindo, in contrast, there's little new development that's apparent. I stayed in the tallest hotel in town and, standing on the roof, I saw the townscape as a cute but dated scene, with many adjummas doing laundry on rooftops, many small narrow streetways and dogs everywhere! (a lot of Jindo dogs wander the streets).
I met some really nice Koreans on Jindo (they are friendly!), but it's also where I was gouged pricewise by a drycleaner who cleaned my pants and shirt (two items) for an outrageous 8,000W. They knew I was from out of town and in a hurry, so I guess it's understandable.
From what I saw, the town on Jindo has the services equivalent to a 10,000 person town back in Canada.
That said, it's not far from Mokpo by a very cheap and convenient bus system, just as there's a cheap bus to the islands near Wando where there are good beaches galore.
Jindo has one famous beach, which had a lot of campers and partiers when I went, that's where the parting of the seas happens, the landing tide phenomenon that leaves a strip of shallow water to an island, so you can walk as if on water, it's called the "Moses Miracle".
Jindo also has one small mountain worth climbing, quite beautiful actually.
I'd consider a six month contract on Jindo, but one year... only if one wants to immerse oneself in the local culture, get to know the locals. |

I'd say that there is definitely more than one famous beach, especially in the southern part of the island.
You'll find a lot of information here:
www.jindo.go.kr
Click on "English". At the greetings screen, go to the top middle and select "Jindo Tour". On the left "Tour Guide" appears. There's a really great map with at least two dozen points of interest to click on.
I recommend, in the southwest, the Namdo Stony Fortress and the wise old Bija tree. In the west of the island there's a spectacular observation platform, what's the name? Of course, when it's hazy, as it often is in Korea, it's not that great. |
