Saw the movie, because it was advertised in the English newspaper. Anyway the policeman father who throws rocks at the car of a guy propositioning his daughter later goes after him at his home. Thought this was very strange especially as the policeman actually entered the house of the guy uninvited and insulted him in front of his family.
Was an eye opener to me to see this. Especially as the guy didn't get up and clock the policeman or kick him out. What he did though was jump out of his apartment to the ground some 15 stories below.
I'm wondering if this is an indication of special police power in this country, or is it an indication of the passive acceptance of people when confronted with something shameful or loss of face. |

I think you're reading too much into it.
If someone(even an off-duty cop) just walks into your house uninvited, well, what's the first thing that's gonna pop into your head? "Gee, this guy must either be a criminal or a lunatic". Now, for many people the preferred method of dealing with a criminal or a lunatic is to just let them say or do what they want and hope that the situation doesn't escalate. If a guy's already decided that he can enter your house without permission, asking him to leave is probably not gonna make much of an impression on him. And yeah, you could try to "clock" him, but, again, many people would try to avoid violence for fear of escalating things. And remember, the john's approach worked, because after giving his speech the policeman just left the apartment.
Police here probably are a little less, shall we say, restrained than the ones back home. I'm just not sure that was the reason for the way the family behaved in that scene. |

I rather liked Samaria (although I didn't like the "he's killing his daughter, oh wait its only just a dream!" cop-out). I've been trying to watch a lot of Korean movies in DVD Bangs and the overall quality is surprisingly good (just saw an enjoyable crim-flick about scammers, which was a good one to watch after getting cheated by my ex-boss ). Don't think I've seen Silmido in DVD Bangs quite yet but will have to see it when it is... |

| I had watched this after having watched "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring" recently, and Kim Kideok's movies are just too damn slow. I like macabre subject matter, but I don't like macabre subject matter that isn't going anywhere. Much like kungfu Buddha dude from the seasons movie, there was an awful lot that made no sense. |

I was unfortunate enough to buy the darn DVD (someone recommended it to me).
I didn't believe the motivation of the first girl prostituting herself just to make money for a vacation to Europe. I doubt many women would do that kind of thing. I think a movie about why a high school girl would go into prostitution could be interesting.
I didn't believe the friend either. It isn't likely that a virgin is going to sit around outside while her friend is in the love motel boinking a stranger, just so they can go to Europe. Then she becomes a prostitute to give the guys back their money. Nope. Why the sudden interest in morality?
I didn't think the movie had much grasp of realistic human motivation. |

| He is meant to be a dark director anyway. I haven't seen it as yet but want to. People say that most of the movies he makes are slow and dark. |
