>. Just my imagination here, or is it indeed part a growing trend based largely on global economic factors of supply & demand ???
What other ( less obvious ) factors may be at play ???

I think there is a naiive element in these adverts. A lot of posts will go unfilled - what is the point of coming half way round the world for these offers? OK some people are desparate so they will get some applicants. Then they moan that the people they get are no use.....
Also - the better schools don't need to advertise or only advertise once....the bad jobs are back again and again.....
I believe supply and demand is working against the schools in fact. They will have to offer better and better deals to attract and retain the good people. There are A LOT of schools out there and not many good teachers...
Of course - we get a lot of rubbish jobs advertised, some of them will be ficticious smoke jobs designed to make the normal ones seem good....too cynical? Ask an estate agent how they operate.
Of course , some of the ads are suspiciously good too.

Actually, it's the opposite. There are a ton of teachers looking to come here. Far more than the amount of schools that are hiring. I'd put it at between 5-10 to 1, of teacher-school availability ratio.
Teachers are coming in from eslcafe, monster.com, hotjobs.com, newspaper ads, job fairs, etc...The worse that a school's condition is, then they hit up more recruiters. And the school then gets barraged with resumes. And there are a lot of teachers out there that just want to get over here, period.
Schools are getting hit with so many resumes that they get picky on the photo. 'Oh, his smile isn't right', 'Is he fat? His face looks...large'. I had a girl who had a Harvard degree, was young and attractive (American girl-young, attractive-Ivy league credentials to put on school adverts=usually a school feeding frenzy for her. The school looked at her picture and said 'hmm...degree, good...young, attractive, OK...North American female, yes...hmm...but her picture...her clothes...she dresses a little...old-fashioned'. She was wearing granola-esque clothes, but still looked great. They took a pass, regardless. Not long after that incident, I gave up recruiting full-time.
Point is, lousy conditions or not, someone's taking the job, And given that a fraction of teachers get jobs thru here and have some knowledge of job-hunting in Korea, there are ton that are coming in from other online and offline sources that don't know any better.
Long term, gigs will get worse, if anything. Too much teacher dilution in the market. Especially compared to 4-5 years ago. Hell, even 2 years ago. |
