Hello everyone,

I have been reading up on anything and everything about working in Korea. I have a few questons which I hope somebody can answer. I know I need to revamp my resume to focus on my teaching experience, which I lack. My last two career attempts were Chartered Accounting and Life Insurance Sales, both rather boring flops to me. Thus, I am using a Functional Resume to highlight any skills I can wean from my previous jobs/volunteer experience.

Now my first question is should I list both my degrees, a B.Sc. (Environmental Science Major) and a B.Comm. (Accounting Major), on my resume? Also if I have 2 degrees listed does that mean I need to get both notarized by the Korean Consulate? If I should list only one, is it worth it to list the newer one (B.Comm.) or the older one (B.Sc.)?

Second, as for references do I include a list with their phone numbers/emails or do I actually get hardcopy letters from each of them and attach them to my cover letter/resume?

Oh, I should mention I am trying to get in contact with a couple recruiters, though I am also trying to find something worthwhile on my own. I am already aware that getting a job from overseas is a major crapshoot, but I am willing to risk this. I do have a contact in Bundang who could probably scout out a possible school before I get there.

References? Don't even bother. Just put: "Available upon request." I've never heard of someone actually checking the references. 2 Degrees? Honestly, if you want to be perfectly honest, list both. But if you just want a job, list the Communications one only. Unless you're trying for a job at the university level, then it might help to list both. If you're going to be stuck in a hagwon, most likely, they won't care if you have 20 degrees, as long as you have one and you're a native English speaker and you look "normal".

Exactly.
You're worrying too much, if you want a hagwon job you can get one no problem by sending out emails saying "hi, I have a Canadian passport and I'm not especially ugly!"

If you're looking for something specific you're going to have to work a little harder, but even in those cases a lot of the time they'll spend more time looking at your picture than your resume (especially since a lot of English hagwon bosses have crap English).

Laughing I love this. It's true and gives me ideas. However, I would have to title mine, "hi, I have a U.S. passport and I'm only a little bit ugly." Laughing Or at least I would if I were willing to settle for a hagwon.

Ok thanks for the heads up, one degree it is. I guess my TESOL employment guide is for non hakwon jobs. Well, time to go find a job (man are there some bad ones out there) and see you all in Korea soon (well the ones still there).

Nah, its just probably exaggerating how hard it is to get hagwon jobs, afterall nobody would buy it if it was honest. Things are a bit more selective in Seoul and some of the better schools, but overall just think of it as sort of McDonalds for College graduates... (don't let that put you off, life here is pretty good if you get a decent school).

How do you fail at being a CA (assuming you passed the UFE)? I thought once you had your CA you were golden, some place.

It's not that difficult to understand. Both the jobs mentioned by Ekolye are basically sales positions. Once you have the necessary licenses, any place will hire you because they often pay straight commission. Then they leave it up to you to find clients. They don't care if you fail, because their investment in you is basically the cost of a phone line and computer, and if you fail your computer will be used by the next person they try out.

Sorry I should clarify a few things. First, my B.Comm. is a Bachelor of Commerce. Second, I didn't even stay till the UFE, I started in a CA firm and realized how boring auditing and taxation would be for 30 years of my life. Plus who wants to sit in a cubicle all day? I also made my decision when Enron and other fiascos were prime time. Then I figured I wanted a job with more people contact. Hence the attempt at life insurance sales, but hey you need to be manipulative of people to make the sales. This wasn't for me either, I didn't like selling to the suckers. Though with the arrogant pompous son of a *beeps*, it was fun to put them into place. A few relatives and friends have told me I should be a teacher, with my patience and creativity. Already having 2 degrees, I will not go back for a third. The debt incurred for it, and the resulting paper wall hangings can only collect so much dust. Now I am here and looking to teach ESL class in Korea.

Well I can see the rumors now, that I am a stressed out, especially ugly, Communications major Chartered Accountant with an American passport looking to land a job. Rolling Eyes
