I've noticed too that drivers here pay no heed to ambulances or fire engines. as a result, you have the picture of a firetruck blaring sirens but getting nowhere fast. It takes them about 10 minutes just to make it from the bottom of the road to near my appartment.
In Zimbabwe anyone who doesn't pull over for the presidential motorcade is in danger of being riddled with bullets.

Well when empty ambulances that are in no real hurry stop driving with their lights flashing, people will be more inclined to believe there's a real emergency.
Same goes for security vehicles, tow-trucks, and anyone esle who thinks they are important enough for sirens and lights.

(OK in this OP case the emergency situation was obvious with the smoke etc, but there is just a general mentality that you don't really yield cause you might not really have to).

It's a shame driving in Korea.
The mentality is M E F I R S T !!!!!
Everyone else including the kid in a wheelchair struggling over a one foot curb second. SO *beep* OFF.

Boys in Blue giving a ticket. The Korean cops are worse than the Timmy Ho 'dozen at a time' OPP.

Sorry about the general negativity towards this great land. Not trying to call Koreans crazy or anything. I shouldn't talk. I got sent to driver rehab back in Ontario.

Well, you guys are both right about the lights and drivers not heeding, etc.

The stupid cops come across as Keystone Cops here because they always run around with their lights going, and bark orders out of their PA speaker.

Instead of having respect, many drivers are like, "Yeah, whatever...."

People don't fear being nailed by the Police enough here.

yesterday when i was rollerbalding on the street, cars were changing lanes to honk at me (as if i don't know i'm on the road). it was annoying, there was no need for that. if koreans could make a decent sidwalk (or bike paths that actually went somewhere useful) i wouldn't have to blade on the road, but i do. it totally blows my mind.

the point of the post is that they'll move over to the slow lane to honk at a rollerblader, but not for a firetruck, isn't that a little sad?

I've always wanted to put a siren on my car complete with the flashing lights.

I could never do that back home... but I'm wondering if in Korea I can make my dream a reality?

They just don't get it do they?

Break-down trucks and even the police crawl around all the time with their emergency lights on, so it's no surprise they're not taken seriously when they're actually in a rush.

I've been woken at night by sirens blaring as emergency services cruise down deserted four-lane roads at 4am.

Korean drivers just won't budge for anyone or anything though. They seem to hit the horn before the brakes over here. We've all been honked at for just walking along the side of the road, I'm sure.

It's supposedly illegal in Korea for anyone except cops, ambulances, and fire trucks to have sirens and lights. They could probably pay off the national debt if they started fining the tow trucks for having them.l
