In my job search so far, I've been offered 2 positions. The first school had 2 positions available...one elementary and one split-shift kinder (the latter which sounded like it would be hell for a mere .1 mil more). I said I'd prefer the elementary one to which the response was "we would prefer a female for the other position anyway."

The next one, I refused (even though the school is desperate to find a new teacher) because of the tiny apartment (there's 2 of us). After refusing, I received the response "Sorry , they are only interested in hiring a female teacher this time."

Sooo...what's the conclusion? Do hagwons expect that women will be willing to settle for less desirable working/living conditions? ...or is it just a face saving tactic (so the school could say they refused the teacher rather than the other way around)?

They don't think women will settle for less, they just want women more for any job in many cases, but especially young kids.

I'm sure the "we were looking for a women anyway" could be a line since the same sort of thing has happened to me where they said "we don't want to hire you because we want a woman" rather than "we don't want to hire you because you have no qualifications. And you're ugly" in order to be polite (at least that's what I think they were doing).

I'm female. It does seem that lots of schools want women maybe because they think they are better with kids, or in worse cases, easier to maniplate, but I bet, if you are a guy, they used the excuse to save face. I was looking at a middle school in Cheonan through a recruiter, and I wanted to know what the name of the school was. They got all weird on me and then said "Oh, the school doesn't want to hire you without any middle school experience," even though my *work related experience* here in Korea is 2 years and counting.

I think they just wanted a "good reason" to say no, or to discard me cause I asked too many questions....
