Everyone is so down on hagwons that i just want to say that some hagwons rock
Basically, I do no prep, am there for about 20 hours a week, the earliest i go in is 3 and the latest i leave is 9, have a nice apartment, my boss is really cool, and no real stress all for the standard 1.9.
I know there are better deals but just to let people know, they are not all bad.
The trick was to fly myself on my own dime and look around for the best deal. I rejected 8 or 9 before this one. I'm glad i did that and not just come in on the blind again. |

Yeah!!! I'm stoked with my hogwan too. Only teachers are my girlfriend and I, they gave us a car, boss is cool, huge appartment. Life's good, filth scenary. I hope it snows shitloads in winter, then I'll even have something to do with all my spare time (we're in a really small town).
Good to hear something positive on this site. |

Yeah, yeah
Thats about the only negative for me, holiday time but the unis around here either suck(read SUPER bad) or the good ones had no vacancies. |

i'm sorry mate..
i really didn't mean it.. hakwons can be cool.. i liked the small class sizes, i could afford to take all my classes for pizza or kfc once a month.. it's a bit hard with 800 students..
i posted somewhere before that i might like a hakwon again cuz the time off is very valuable.. with 'my' kind of jobs i kinda take it for granted.. |

| I spend most of my time teaching in public schools. They all went on vacation today so I'm pretty much on holidays for the next month. But I have a few classes in the hogwan that'll stop me from going anywhere. Know of anything to do in Kangwondo? |

I can't complain too much myself. My boss is a decent woman. The school's upper ups can be evil. Luckily that evil has passed over me, so far.
In general, if you give your Korean boss and coworkers kindness, they'll return kindness. The worst thing to do is treat screw ups like it's the Koreans out to get the waegook. No matter what side of the pacific pond you're on, all corporate structures stumble from one cluster fluk to another cluster fluk. And generally
But yeah I work 20 hours a week for my 2 mil. My apartment is nice, new, and comes with A/C. It's right across from my school so commute time is nil.
We don't have a lot of insane rules to follow. I should generally follow the text book but if I want to sometimes bust out and do something different, no one complains.
My class sizes aren't too big anymore (they were really packing them in for a while).
The school is well air conditioned. That's another bonus. |

My current soon to be former hagwon was fine until just recently. Basically they're trying to screw me out of a shedload of cash, all in all approx 1m.
They booked a ticket for me to go home to the UK (as in the contract), as the won is very weak at the moment and it is peak time tickets are a bit pricey. They found a ticket for just 800,000! Why so cheap? Because it is via Bangkok, so it means a six hour flight, followed by a 2 hour stopover followed by a twelve hour flight! They've refused to pay any more than 900000 and I had to fight for the 'extra' 100000, and I mean really fight.
They also dont want to pay the pro rata basis bonus that I'm entitled to under Korean labour law, they pulled a bit of a scam on me on that one. I also had to have arguments with them about 400000 owed in unpaid holiday that was in the contract but never recieved.
90% of Hagwon owners are pure rubbish in human form, the lowest of the low. 10% or maybe a bit less are OK but trust them about as far as you could comfortably spit a rat. |

Me too. Earliest I go in is 1, latest I leave is 8...and I'm not teaching the whole time.
My boss is nothing to write home about though. |

I honestly can't see the problem. They bought the ticket but it is cheaper for them.
Every time I've ever come here or back is through a similar transfer because of the reason you stated, it is usually cheaper.
They are trying to find the cheapest ticket. You can't put the heat on them for that. |

had to jump in on this one. most of my friends hate me this month. they all have fat ass schedules and mine....well mine stayed the same. no summer intensives! yayayay. last time i did those, i didnt even get over time, so real glad im not doing them this time as i sue as well wouldnt get ot!
i must say my hogwan rocks also. i go in at 2, work till six. 1 hour of that is break time. my classes are tiny, my students are ,mostly all good, my dress code is non exsistant plus im in the 2 mill bracket. my prep time is nil, due to teaching the same book, for most of my classes, plus i just scored us a new photo copier because i packed a sh#t with the owner for the 5th time this month, she finally caved! plus my boss has given up trying to be my best bud, which is great, im the only foriegner here, and my other 2 korean teachers are all good! well..... lets just say im pretty content right now. ha! what a great start to sa monday! laterz
