Well we were seeking positions as a couple. Then a recruiter came up with a really good position in a public school for my "other half".

The recruiter is enticing me with really great part time positions to fly to Korea on my own coin. If the positions pan out it is really worth it but if they don't work out then I'll be out the airfare over.

Since I will be living with my "other half" (already confirmed that) housing won't be an issue. I have 6 years teaching experience (not esl) and a 4-year degree so if the part-time position doesn't pan out then I will find a job I'm sure. The thing is I don't want to be out the $1500 it will cost for a one-way ticket.

Do you think I should take a chance on the recruiters word or do you think I should try to snag a position in the general area before I leave Canada.

(I have my own thoughts but thought I would throw it out to the group.)

If you come over on your own coin and look around you will have a much better chance of finding a better job than from back home. Most university teachers don't get airfare and must of us think, when comparing hagwons to universities, that it's a pretty good deal.

The ease of finding a good job depends on where you'll be living and part time work is usually illegal.

I guess so (about finding a better job) but the flight is nearly the price of a months salary. That means it is like you are working the first month for free. Then if it takes a few weeks to find a job that means you lose another months salary. It isn't so much I can't afford it, but that is money that you will never get back. Smile

When you consider the price of the ticket and the time to find a job, it's like working 2 months for free. Smile

I am leaning toward buying the ticket though...

I would. After 9 years and 7 total contracts and renewals I've only ever had one ticket paid for (the first one).

7 contracts between my husband and I. Every one had the flights (round-trip) paid for. Wouldn't consider a job that didn't pay for it.

Here's my suggestion.

Come over on your own steam, say to the recruiter, I will consider your offers. when I get there, not before.

But since you are coming yourself you have the right to be picky, look into the job and accommodation carefully, and choose well. Therin lies the benefit.

Then, if you are worried about the cash for the plane ticket, make up your mind not to start work without at least a one way airfare in your pocket.

You should find a job soon, and set yourself up for the year.

Staying a short time makes it a difficult choice. But I decided to just go for it, paid the airfare cash even though I was coming for a little while.

It made it a sweet deal for anyone who I talked to about the job, I think.

I think I could have pushed the point about the cash I spent but I didn't because I am not working long enough, I am just recovering what I can. It's my trip. Had I been staying a year or even 6 months I would have insisted on plane fare.

But I got a sweet job, good pay and extra hours at a summer program, employer is happy and so am ! Wink

Edit on my previous post:

I had my ticket paid for two times, not once.
