today has got to be the worst teaching day I've ever had. The timetable was changed more than a few times, and changed even when i was given a timetable on paper. I ended up teaching 7 hours straight with no lunch break.and big mixed classes.our boss is working everyone too hard man, it's just too much, there's bound to be a repercussion at some point.
on the upside, it can hardly get worse. just 5 more months... |

My old boss tried to do that in my first week. I let her know in no uncertain terms that it wasn't going to keep happening.
Someone here had a really good idea about saying you need twenty minutes prep time for class, and spending the first twenty minutes in the staff room if they pull that on you frequently. |

yeah, i was suprised as this is the first time it happened, and just when i thought i had a break, they had to change it so the korean teachers could clean up the school for an open class this evening. I'f I'd been given a schedule first up before all the classes i would have refused. maybe that was part of the plot to keep me guessing, who knows. It's a tough deal, because i know that if i had refused today, a korean teacher would be slotted those classes, on top of everythign else they have to do.
regardless, it's not going to happen again. |

arggggggh I remember random timetable changes. I feel for you. Maybe try and have a selection of lesson plans that you pull out at a moments notice for emergencies would be a good idea. |

Oh yeah. That's par for the course. I remember we changed to morning schedule for a couple weeks but no one told me. My boss (female) was knocking on my door at 9 am. Luckily I was semi dressed...
And then there was the joy leaving Friday night, looking forward to the weekend and seeing Lord of the Rings with friends, and being told I suddenly had a couple Saturday courses to teach in the early evening... despite my contract saying Monday - Friday. (I was just starting and there weren't a lot of courses to teach ... about one or two a day... so technicaly I didn't mind letting them get a bit of value for their money by doing what it took until exam season was over and the kids came back... it only lasted a few weeks.)
But as I've said before, don't take this stuff personally. I've worked for some pretty big "successful" companies in North America and they're as capable of such constant cluster frucks. If your apartment is decent and they pay you on time, laugh this stuff off. |

now, i've read elsewhere on the board that this sort of thing is a boss trying to test you out -- to see if they can get you to perform duties outside your contract. honestly i'd probably react the same way you did, trying to give them value for their money since there wasn't a full course load during the week.
however, i don't want to start down the slippery slope of acquiescing to the boss with every schedule change or additional duty added outside of the contract. wouldn't it be awful to have "just this one time" to turn into saturday evening courses for the rest of my contract?
should one always stick to the contract and leave major scheduling difficulties up to the school? i'm not talking about classes getting rearranged on a particular day, but stuff like "we'd like you to work an early morning shift even though it's not in your contract and we didn't mention it in the interview" or "won't you come in and teach on saturday afternoon"? |

Ah...summer session! The veterans know that come July/August, the schedule is going to change and no one will tell you about it!! After you've been here for a year (or two!) you know enough to ask "When does summer vacation start" (and they NEVER know exactly!) and know that the schedule will go through several changes before it's ironed out...JUST BEFORE fall semester begins again!! |

hahah, yeah, i usually take it all in my stride.but beep, adjusting to an early start and the heat, burnt out...blahblah all the usual...
i knew it was going to be interesting when it was the students who told me about the time-table change before the teachers. Went through the same thing in winter, i blew off some steam at school by cursing under my breath in a satisfyingly guttural second language. that helped. |

Yes. That's the best part when you hear about your new schedule from the students.
"How are you today?"
"I'm sad, teacher."
"Why are you sad?"
"This is the last class we have with you?"
"Really?"
"Yes."
"Oh, first thing I heard about it."
"Yes, you might be working on Saturday. And the stock option plan has been changed to a yearly bonus system." |

Easier still- I have this week off.
For a month I understood I had Monday to Friday off but last Friday an hour before the end of my day I was told to come in Monday and get next Tuesday off instead. So next week I only work 4 days and next Monday is payday.
As for schedule changes otherwise I just wait until all the Korean teachers are in their classrooms and find the teacherless class. Why fight it? |
