Has this ever happened to anyone else? Yesterday I went to the ATM in the bank near my house to get some money to pay for my phone bill today (which I didn't pay last month). I checked my balance, and was told it was 388000 won. So I said I wanted 380000. The machine told me "please wait". So I waited, and waited... and waited. Eventually the machine said a bunch of stuff in Korean, which I don't understand. And then spat out my card, but no money. So I try again, but this time I am told my balance is 7000 won. The ATM stole 380000 won plus the 1000 witdrawal fee! It was after hours, so the bank was shut, and there are no numbers to call in case of malfunction anywhere around the ATM. Somehting like this has never happened to me or anyone I know before. Sure, people have lost their cards, but never their money. Evil or Very Mad

You must be a newbie.

I've only experienced Korean ATMs to give even numbers of won amounts: 10000, 30000, 50000, 100000, 200000, 300000 and so on.

ATMs usually have an English button and also include an option to view your balance.

Relax.

Actually, I see the OP's predicament, newb or not. The ATM recognized your transaction and gave you a new balance, despite not giving you any money. I've had this happen before, but my balance wouldn't be affected, if I made a mistake on the earlier attempt. Sounds like an error. I'd check your bank about it.

I had the same thing happen as in the OP, although not in that large an amount. I tried to get cash, didn't work (everything in Korean, no English button) and tried again. This time it didn't work again, so I gave up and didn't eat that night.

Next day I checked and it was still not working so I called the bank. Seems there was an error, the money was taken from my account, but no cash given. So it'd take 36 hours to credit my account. waited for the time and had the cash back. Got it from an ATM.

Of course you can take out any amount that is a multiple of ten up to your daily limit, thats what the "other" button is for!

Don't worry, it'll fix itself the next day.

This happened to me twice with the HANnet Atm's. I withdrew 300,000 won and the thing did exactly what you described, said some Korean on the screen and spit out a reciept after a minute or two. Call the number on the reciept or ATM if you want... both times the receptionist (english speaker available) said that the money would be credited back to account shortly. Though, your bank see's it as a legitimate withdrawl and counts towards your daily limit.

Good luck

Well, it's ok. I did check it the next day (yesterday) and I had all the money back.

Newbie? I know I've only been here for 11 months, but I believe I have learned quite well how to use the ATMs here in that time. As someone else mentioned, this ATM, like all others I have used lets you withdraw any amount up to the machine's limit, simply by pressing the button labelled "Other". And there is an English button, which I pressed, like everytime I use the ATM. It wasn't the Korean on the screen which was a problem (there was none), it was the voice emenating from within the machine.

Annoyingly, there is no number on the machine to call, so that was not an option. Rolling Eyes

Whattefunk, thanks for the advice. If I didn't have the money back yesterday I might have gone the pickaxe road. Twisted Evil

That happened to me once before. The evil Pusan Bank machines in Jurye, Sasang stole 200,000 won from me. Had to call the bank to sort it out. Don't assume it will automatically fix itself.

Also had the same machine eat my credit card! Had to call the security dude to come around and get it back for me.

Bloody banks!
