Is it some new Korean government edict that you need your passport for visiting the off-shore islands?
I was trying to take the ferry to Hongdo yesterday and the Korean official refused to let me on the boat without a passport. After much arguing I managed to convice him to accept my ACR instead. Almost ended up missing the ferry though. |

They want to see a passport if you charter a fishing boat off the east coast too. Managed to talk my way through it, but it would have been easier had I thought to bring it. |

I got asked for ID going to Wonsan-do last week but they didn't insist on a passport. My ARC was enough, and my friend used a Canadian driver's licence. |

I went to Hongdo last summer and nobody asked me for anything at any time on any of the ferries or tour boats, except to buy the outrageously expensive raw fish cut and served next to the tour boat off the island's coast (I didn't fork out the 40,000 W many Korean tourists coughed up).
They let you go eventually and, if you had as good a time as I did, it was well worth the hassle, eh? |

But i thought this was going overseas
Well for most Koreans it is.
I've been to Jejudo twice, and the west coast islands a couple of times and never been asked for anything. |

Didn't need it to go to Deokjeokdo, they asked you to put in your passport number on the stub of the ticket, but didn't need to see the real thing. |

They didn't ask me to do that. Were you on the Aukland Ferry Co. boat? |

I've never needed it either, for multiple trips to and from the Yellow Sea islands, including this weekend. I also didn't need it when I flew to Chejudo.
They asked for my passport number, but didn't complain when I gave them my ARC number instead. As near as I can tell, they only ask for that so they can notify your next of kin if the ferry sinks. |

They don't check the tickets to see if you have or haven't written anything on the ferry to and from Deokjeokdo. |

I was on the slow ferry, wasn't sure if they checked what you'd written on the way out, but on the way back they collected on the boat after we'd set off. So if the boat sinks, all the tickets go with it- pointless. |

I got stopped at the turnstile for not having written anything in the passport number on mine once, so I guess it depends on who's taking tickets that day.

So does my cellphone, which is the phone number I write on the ticket. |
