Greetings,
I'm on my way in about three weeks. I got a sweet job with lots of holiday time. As a lifelong camper, I want to know: are there enough opportunities to go camping that bringing my beloved MEC Tarn 3 will be worth its space in my luggage? Are there sufficient outfitters that its unnecessary?
TIA,

There are only two outdoor activities in Korea, hiking and skiing. And while skiing is seasonal, hiking is constant and forever. No self respecting Korean would be caught dead going up a mountain (or hill, or slight incline) without a full backpack (containing God-only-knows-what), a pick-axe, rope, tin cup, various accessories for your boots, the ugliest socks known to mankind, and a tent or rubber raft for good measure. You'll see it when you get here. The only thing for Koreans to do in the wild is hike and they take it seriously!
As for bringing your gear, don't worry about it. There are tons of stores here that sell stuff. May not be as good as yours, but I found things at Wal-Mart here (sleeping bag, tent, etc.) that let me spend a few nights out in the Korean wilderness.
There are camping opportunities, but getting to a remote location is a bit of a pain. I've gone through a travel club. Check it out at www.adventurekorea.com They offer camping trips 1-2 times a year and it's worth it to get to a place where you are alone with the night sky nary a Korean around. |
